Old, dense-headed hammers are cool. Best nail pounders.

Great Question!
The one that I crave is the 53B Pee Wee Reese -- absolutely great horizontal shot of Pee Wee in full flight turning a double play with the base runner sliding underneath him. The card is georgous and I love Pee Wee (my first baseball glove was a Pee Wee Reese model) Unfortunately, the price tag is in the stratosphere...Someday, I'll pick up a nice ex-mt or nmt copy.
Here's a link to a SGC-88 copy

My favorite is the 87 Topps D. Mattingly. Wood borders of the last Yankee captain during his prime. He is in the batters box locked in on the pitcher with a scruffy 2-day growth beard. This card is a modern card that has the look and feel of vintage.

Lothar- If I remember correctly starting with 86 Topps Traded, Topps lowered the minimum purchase requirement to $5000. This was just at the beginning of the card boom. Everybody was waiting for the release of the 87 product due to the strong RC class. The lower minimum coupled with the strong RC class allowed anyone with a Tax ID # to buy cases of cards for "investment"

I don't think building any set in SGC-96 would be fun!

I love that 71 Thurmon Munson card. Great picture, awesome card design. As for the 87 Topps set, I agree it is a wonderful set. It is a shame that so much of it is out there, making it almost worthless. I have a few setts (all hand built) and a couple of boxes of rack packs. That is a great looking set, and when you look at the players, I think it may be one of the best sets ever! You have the aforementioned awesome rookie class (Bonds, Palmiero, McGwire, Maddux, Bo Jackson......) plus, it is a great transitional year as you have really 3 generations of superstars. You have a bunch of stars who started in the 60s and were in the tail end of their careers (Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Reggie Jackson....) a bunch of guys who came up in the 70s and were still going strong (Schmidt, Rice, Dawson, Murray, Winfield, Henderson.....) and the new wave of stars at the time that were just making a name for themselves (Mattingly, Boggs, Gwynn, Ripken, Sandberg....) That is one of my cheapest sets, AND one of my favorites.

The coolest card I've ever owned is the N172 Old Judge King Kelly -- Link. Of course, it would look much better in an SGC holder! (hint, hint!)
