Here is a small sample of 1959 Topps Baseball PSA graded cards (all NM 7) that I cracked and crossed over to SGC holders:

40-Spahn (correct birth year) SGC 88 +1 grade improvement
316-Lumenti (no option line) SGC 80 -1 grade
369-Tomanek (common card) SGC 86 + 1/2 grade improvement

I'm obviously thrilled with the Spahn. It was definitely a high end PSA 7 and I was fully expecting an 86, holding out hope for an 88.

The Lumenti was almost as nice and I was sure it would grade 86, too. Didn't even get an 84, though. It was purchased on eBay in the PSA holder from dslsports in January. Won't be selling it, but it has now become a very expensive ExMt card.

Tomanek was also a high end PSA 7. I expected at least a half grade bump and got it.

As a result of these most recent (and positive) crossover results, I decided to take a look back at all my crossover history and perhaps post scans of the results.

Like many who play the crossover game, I almost always crack and submit raw. It simply makes more sense to get a good look at the raw card before spending $6 or $7 to have the grader tell me what (I think) I already know.

For my '59 baseball set, that I've kept records for, I've cracked 17 PSA 7 cards, three PSA 8 cards, six GAI 7.5 cards and numerous SGC cards. Here are the results.

Let's look at the three PSA 8 cards first:

Old Roy Mac of the Redlegs

Beautiful red card of 'Nats ace, Camilo Pascual

Nice Hansen rookie that got a half grade bump

So, one of three PSA 8's got a 1/2 grade bump up and the other two crossed level.

Of the six GAI 7.5 cards I cracked, two crossed level into SGC 7.5 holders, three got a half grade bump up to SGC 88 and one went all the way up to SGC 92.

Solly Hemus is the big winner

I was also well pleased with this Braves Team. The card this one replaced in my set came from a wax box break, but only made an 84 due to centering.

I've actually kept lousy records of my SGC "re" submits. I did find nine formerly SGC 84 cards that now reside in a newer holder. One stayed at 84. Three bumped up to 86, including this Eddie Mathews (which actually made a third trip to NJ to get what I thought it deserved). I bought the 84 already slabbed and...

...frankly, I didn't think there was ever any question that it deserved a little love

Five more went all the way from 84 to 88 on the second trip. Here are the two most deserving.

and Whitey

Always good to get Yankee and Dodger bumps for a $6 fee, rather than buying the cards on the open market in these grades.

Finally, my most common crack & resubmit game is to buy high end PSA 7 cards, hoping for 86 and 88 grades back from SGC. I've done well. Out of 17, only one came back no change (SGC 84). Three got a half grade bump including two toughies, Hank Bauer (no scan) and

Luis, Luis

Ten cards got a full grade bump up to SGC 88. These potentially saved me the most money:

Spahn, from the most recent sub

My cost? Well below $100, even with a regrade fee.

low number Giants team

My cost? About $50 including the grading fee. Super tight register and focus, this is one of my favorite cards.

Zim

My eBay seller assured me the Zimmer would bump to PSA 8. I needed it in SGC 88, so he may have been miffed he didn't try again with PSA before selling to me on eBay. It would have sold for easy 3 figures in the PSA holder. My cost for a 7 which turned into an 88? Under $30 including the grading fee.

And another Yankee

For $20 and a grading fee.

I also somehow managed to cross three PSA 7 cards all the way up to SGC 92. Needless to say, these were pleasant surprises and gladly accepted.

Low number common

Mid series common (whoops no scan)

High number, not so common

I'm compelled to ask a rhetorical question. PSA, what were you thinking?

Instead, I'll just take this opportunity to thank the sellers of these gems for not looking as closely as I did. For those patient enough, crossover is a game that can be won.

I found two more examples. This Spahn All-Star was purchased on eBay in an SGC 84 holder. The scan looked great and even more stunning in person. So I cracked it and sent it in.

The Pierce All-Star has long been rumored to be the toughest high number to find nice, since about 1952. I've owned several, but all lower quality...until this one. It was a raw find, I think. But it may have been a PSA 7. It's been so long, I just can't recall. First time, it came back an SGC 86. I was satisfied with that and felt the slight tilt to the photo might preclude an upgrade. Once, just to round out an invoice, I cracked it and took my best shot. There was the risk it could come back an 84. But I'm glad I took that risk.
