Dear All

From time to time I like to test the waters of the dreaded PSA Qualifier to gain valuable insight as to what it all really means. Two lessons learned: Bought a 1963 Fleer PSA 9 (OC) Vada Pinson which translated into an SGC 84. PSA 6 (MK) 63 Fleer Checklist comes across as an SGC 30.

Thus endeth the lesson. Anyone have similar stories to share or am I the only "dumb" one throwing away money doing something like that?

I have bought a few 1964 Topps that are PSA graded with the "OC" qualifier - two 9's and one 8. I will probably wait until I have a few more to send in for crossover. The motivating factor in buying them was cost. Those qualifiers really bring down the price tag. Great question, I look forward to reading any responses.

I've only crossed over a qualified card once...a 9OC became an 86, which was pretty much what I expected. I picked up the card for a song and needed it for my set, and did what I had to do.

I actually had a very good experience crossing over a PSA 9 OC card to SGC. I bought a 1971 Billy Grabarkewitz card off ebay that was graded PSA 9 OC. The side to side centering was fine and the top to bottom centering was about 70/30. It came back an SGC 92. Since then I am always on the lookout for PSA 9 OC cards that I think can get at least an SGC 88. I must admit, I have not seen any other PSA 9 OC 71s that would cross to at least an SGC 88 - most are too far off center.

Anyone going to Sportsfest in Chicago at the end of this month? I am looking forward to it because I also have tickets to two Cubs games against the Brewers. Not the greatest opponent, but my first games at Wrigley. All the other years I have visited Chicago the Cubs have always been on the road.

If you caught a great deal with the price of the cards it wasn't a too costly
venture. But you are right. Most times the cards with the qualifiers will
cross poorly (my opinion). I wouldn't spend money or time trying this
too often.

I think this is an interesting topic. Throughout the hobby, I think there are many cards that are undergraded or would sell for greater amounts in another company's holder (either because of more liberal grading standards or the added precision of half-grades). I also firmly believe that someone could make a substantial amount of money solely by buying and reselling (and re-grading) this type of material on eBay. Of course, the trick is getting a seller to send you properly resolved oversized images of the corners of that "super high-end" NM/MT card that they're selling, otherwise it's purely guesswork!
