I think McDougald and Shantz will cross to 84, Shantz might even bump to 86. Probably not a cross on Phillips (centering) and Surkont (bottom corners). JMO

I agree with bbo. Shantz may well be bump-worthy. McDougald and Phillips are next, with Phillips tight on centering -- I'd say that card is less than 50/50 to cross. I do not believe that the Surkont will cross.

Dave,
TripleSSS Sportscards bought the 1957 Topps "Lionel Carter" set from a Mastro Auction last year. They sold a group of them to sgcman and I was able to get a few of them. The remainder of the set has suffered a different fate that I won't mention here.
Matt
Matt PM me or email me at davidmeale@hotmail.com. I would like hear about the rest of them.
Dave

ColleSystem what is the deal with the Aaron? It looks to good to be a 5. Maybe a bach wrinkle?
Dave
For a NM/MT Aaron you can reasonably expect a range of $560 - $900 with a more likely number of $650 - $700.

I'm a "centering" kind of guy myself. It's just something about a nicely centered card. Even if the corners are chewed off, I still like the centering. Call me crazy...I've been called worse.
Not me! I like my cards the same as I like my women. Sharp and fresh-looking (like new) with no evidence of abuse, excessive handling or wear. A little off-centered is OK as long as she's not a total whack job, you know, miscut showing parts of another. No schitzo's need apply.

Wow, that's a nice one.
Those '57s are really gorgeous. That's what sucks about message boards - if you hang around them long enough, your whole collection changes because you wind up starting a new set every time someone else posts a nice card.

John,
The piggy bank is going to need something stronger than liquid nails to be put back together after buying the Koufax. But you are right, it is the only SGC 96 Koufax; so it will be easier to find more money.
Matt
I am going to jinz myself, but hopefully by the end of this week, I will have the 2nd 57T Koufax SGC 96.

Hi Dave,
I trade most of my PSA 8s that don't cross with Paul Jas.. I had an Amoros and E. Johnson which just went in the mail to him yesterday. I still have a few cards available for trade. PSA 8: #s 133, 151, 295 and 354. The following SGC cards are all very nice, but have been upgraded: Aparicio(88), Zuverink(88), Pafko(88), Wilhelm(88), Hemus(92), Fowler(88), Orioles Team(88), Koufax(88), Hall(88), Neeman(92), Terry(88). I am also in the process of upgrading my Mantle, which I think you saw a scan of previously. I would be interested in any sharp PSA 8s to fill holes in my set.
Matt

Most of those 88's should have gone to 92. I think the 84 was a bit harsh, but it may have been the weakest 88 originally, based on what I see in the scan.
But, man, that had to leave a mark. Six up, two down and seven remained the same. Cost around $110 with the shipping and gained you maybe .01 on the Registry.
I, too, have played the crack and resub game. I do much better with PSA crackouts than SGC crackouts, leading me to conclude that SGC is the more consistent and correct grader.
Kinda like a company buying up their own stock when they can't be like Warren Buffet and buy someone else out.

Did you get those raw (at the National possibly)?
I hope the answer is "yes and raw meat such as this is still out there."
I collect 59's (SGC, averaging about an 87) and I know a guy who has a set better than mine, but his is raw and he will NEVER, EVER get any graded. The guy is over 60 years old, he's totally anal about his set and has probably instilled that in his kids so that they will NEVER, EVER part with them when he's gone.

bbo,
No, these cards were already graded by SGC when I bought them. BMW Sportscards does have an entire high-grade raw 1957 Topps set. Brian has only had a couple of them graded to this point, I got a SGC 96 Campanella out of it. I have been waiting MONTHS for him to get some more graded.
Matt
My expereince with Brian is that he will give you a price, once agreed, he will send it in to ensure the grade and it is then sent to yourself. They have tons of cream raw just wainting for people to buy based on request to be graded/guaranteed to meet grade.

I guess I will interupt the Viagra and Porn site postings to show a few SGC graded baseball cards on this message board.
I can't stand those posts. I hope the moderators check these boards more thoroughly to stop this crap from getting on the boards. Oh, great looking cards and keep up the good work.

Whatever happened to the '57 Topps thread? I checked it out and LOVED looking at all the posted pictures! You all have some awesome pictures! I would love to see many more! I am currently collecting the '58 Topps set but my second 50's set IS the 1957 Topps! So, how about some more pictures?
THANKS!

Hi Matt~
THANK YOU! I got goose bumps reading your message about having a 1957 Brooks RC waiting for you! I am a BIG Brooks Robinson fan and that is above all my favorite! I currently do not have one, but I would like to! I love the 1957's - maybe more than the '58's - it's a toss up - but both sets are my Favs! How long have you been collecting the '57's? Let me ask you something - when you cross a card over (which I've never done) how exactly does that work? If it doesn't equal in grade will they crack it out of the casing or leave it if you state it must meet the equal grade? I have about 5 PSA 7's I would like to send in for my 1958 set but wasn't sure if I should take the risk or not. Perhaps I could sell them off and just try and pick them back up in SCG grade. What do you think? I think your cards are awesome and would like to see more. You did very well on the crossovers and I'm sure you must be pleased with that! What made you decide to crossover to start with?
EARL

Matt, Great cards. I am down to 16 to finish off myset.
92,114,122,166,171,240,274,280,303,329,330,342,391 and three big ones Mays,Mantle, and the Power Hitters.
By the way did anyone see the 57 Mantle prewarcards just auctioned off??? I think someone got a steal at $2400 and change. My wife put the nix on my bidding, but if I would have sold more cards leading up to that I would have just done it anyways. I just didn't have any extra card money at the time. I am now building up my paypal account for my next big purchase.
Dave

Hi Dave~
What auction were you referring to? Can it still be viewed? I'd like to check it out if I could. I try to keep up on the pricing trends and what things are going for. I've been saying for the past couple of weeks that a LOT of bargains are starting to show up! Are you seeing the same?
EARL
Would like to see some of your '57's too!

Often it becomes really difficult for single parents to get into a date or to find a date when they have so much responsibility and also not much time. Luckily internet can be a very good resource for parents to get a date using online dating agencies.
If you are looking to get into a relationship then this is a good place to start.
The best thing is once you get a adultfriendfinder membership then you can can automatically get all memberships of other sites that are offered by adult friend finder. These are all dating websites, best thing is you can get points by getting all memberships and then redeem those points to get a gold membership absolutely free.
Click the link Dating Agencies For Parents to read how you can get a gold membership for any of the dating sites that adult friend finder offers. Just use the points to get gold membership of any website you want. Enjoy!

Hi Matt~
I just wanted to let you know that there is a RAW 1957 Topps Sal Maglie up for auction that is from a set break that looks pretty sharp. You've probably have already seen it, but I thought I'd tell you anyway just in case you didn't! It looks really nice to me!

Sweet mother of baseball. That Joe Adcock is a BEAST. The deep reds and precise register/focus. I think I see the remnants of an old blister on his right thumb. And Joe needs to have that mole above his elbow checked out by a dermatologist.
Old Duke ain't bad, but then I have an affinity for the rough cuts.

Hey BBO - Did you see Bunning wink at you!;) Those are awesome cards Matt! BTW, what is your set registered under - or is it? I wanted to look at it in its entirety! Who is the guy holding down the #1 Registry set? I see he has everything locked down across the board! He wouldn't respond to an email! Nice pick ups!

PS - trying to work out a deal to get a group submission together. You interested bbo or how about you Matt? I am suppose to get back with Sean about it today. If you are interested let me know. Thanks~

I only have 3 commons from 59 baseball ready to go right now. Could have more by end of the month, but too soon to tell. Don't wait on me.
Don't forget to butter up the graders. It works. (See my thread on 59s to see what I'm talking about.)

Matt, Very nice Johnny P. That card has always looked weird to me. I ran thru a few 7's and finally got a 8 I like last year. The Wynn is unreal and the Ditmar is a tough card as well. I only wished PSA holders looked as good as SGC's. Either that or my set was 98% SGC graded and not PSA!!! I still need 10 more to complete. 10,92,95,114,166,240,280,303,391,407

It's been a few years since I worked on a 57 Topps set, but Cimoli was the last card in 8 to pop up. Other tough ones were Naragon, Garcia, Lopez, Red Sox Team, Pyburn, Phillips, and probably a few more that I'm forgetting. The 300s have some brutal cards in there.

I Brian! I was curious as to whether or not you completed your set yet or still working on it? I think I may want to do that one next - at least I would really like to. In the order of favorites, that one is a toss up with the 1958 set. I think Matt's compilation is one of the finest sets I have ever had the enjoyment of seeing. He has done such a great job putting it together. Very nice!

Matt, I have the Newcombe in 8 already but thx. I have snipes set on 3 cards currently on ebay.
I am going to go out on a limb and guess we will both be sniping the M. Vernon.

Great looking Covington. Nixon must be a tough one to find centered if that one was acceptable to you. Centering doesn't bother me as much as the absence of color. Exposure on the photo makes it look kind of black and white.

Saw Warren at a show about 10 years ago, maybe 15. Uglier than Don Mossi, I kid you not. One of the ugliest, meanest, unfriendliest people on the planet. Looked like he had been run over by an ugly truck with a back seat full of uglies. Uglier than the morning mirror image of a 15-beer pickup from the night before. Uglier than a pile of....well, you get the picture.
But that card makes him look almost human.
Bet it cost a pretty penny in PSA 9.
Edited by bbo (05/18/09 08:55 PM) Edit Reason: add another ugly reference because he was that ugly.

Nice cards!
Just curious about ML was able to cross over a few PSA cards to SGC for you... Do they have more presence with SGC or better luck vs if you sent them directly to SGC?
Gary,
I/probably any good customer of Mem. Lane can go through their inventory and select cards they would like in SGC holders. M.L. sends them to SGC for crossover, the ones that make it are purchased; the ones that don't remain M.L.'s property.
Matt

I upgraded my Williams to this one. The left/right centering isn't the best, but the corners are Gem Mint and the photo quality is great. Matt
The centering looks great to me.

Hey Matt! Is that the Berra from Memory Lane? I can't wait to see it in an SGC holder! If it is the one I saw, it is a beauty! Did Paul ever come through for ya?

Truly the FINEST 57 Berra I can recall ever seeing! The crisp registry of this card is awesome and centering is awesome! Great pick up Matt! I know you are happy to almost be done, but I will miss looking at your set and the updates I have enjoyed for nearly a year! Yours is the MOST impressive 57 set I have ever seen in my 38 years of collecting!

I don't see your set on the SGC Registry. What's the average grade and what's it worth if put up for sale?

It is listed under 1957 Topps Basic Set (mattbojo). As far as what it's worth, I will work on that once it is complete. It still depends on what kind of Mantle, Drysdale, and Aaron I can come up with.
Matt

Yes, I got them from Nick. I am down to four cards for completion of the set. Aaron is the only star player I still need. Sorry but my Brooks Robinson card is staying in the set.

WOW MATT! That card is AWESOME! It looks almost PERFECT! Nice going on the crossover!
WHY these two --- I still need #307 (J. Phillips) and #406 (Bob Hale)? I mean are they very hard to find in high grade nicely centered? Or just happen to be the last two?

REA is Robert Edward Auctions which will end on May 1. I hope the set does well, they did a good job on the write up. They seem to have primarily Prewar cards in their Auctions, but with any luck there will be a few people out there interested in bidding on it. Hi Matt! How does it feel to be auctioning off a set you spent 3 years tediously putting together? It must be kind of bittersweet I imagine? I trust that REA does you well as for the promotion and successful sale. I doubt anyone will ever put together another set to rival yours...just my own thoughts. Thanks for sharing the thrills with me and everyone here who watched you assemble your masterpiece. Now that its on the auction block, I'm curious to see where the numbers finally end. If it doesn't go for over $125,000, I will be shocked! Good luck and keep us posted!

I understand your desire to sell it whole, with (perhaps) the hope of the buyer keeping it intact. But you could be leaving a substantial sum of green on the table.
I doubt a single individual buyer will push it above six figures. You may get a few guys that go in together and agree to split it up. That might get it up to the six figure level.
At an average grade of 91.1, that roughly translates to an 8.388 on the 10-point scale. At least five current sets on the PSA Registry exceed that numerical average, but I have no doubt whose set is the higher quality. Yours!
Here's hoping some of those Registry Chasers bid you up, with the intent on crossing to improve their lot in life. Though that would be a sad day indeed to break up a beautiful SGC set.

I agree with bbo that breaking it up would bring in a higher total price. In fact one reason to buy as a set is to break it up for profit, so it may be broken up sometime down the line anyway. Anyway GL on your sale.

Good luck on the sale Matt, while I agree with what bbo is saying about breaking it and I sell my stuff piece by piece, every time I have tried to buy an exhibit set at auction the last 3 years it goes for record numbers, gurr go figure. I hope you have the same luck.

Which set I build next depends a lot on how this one does at Auction. If it goes for somewhere in the neighborhood of Earl's optimistic prediction I will be very HAPPY!
Matt Well Matt, I don't know how you feel, but I think whomever won your 57 set got the bargain of a lifetime! I don't know what you have into the cost alone, but it just seems that $65,000 is way, way too cheap! Hope it didn't hurt you too badly.

I think the buyers premium was close to 20%. U have to add that to the price so its not exactly a crime of robbery.

If my math is right...that works about to average $159.00 per card. I don't have a lot of experience with this set, but that doesn't sound like too much when you consider the cards and their grades.

I think a lot of lots in REA were very soft this auction. I won the lot I really wanted but I was following about 15 of them and all but 3 were well under what I would have paid for them.
I dont know what Matt's breakeven was but I hope he didnt lose a bundle.

First rule of selling a set:
It's not your set anymore, so make it desirable to the most number of people as possible and don't try to keep it together. It's not like it's a family of orphaned kids, it's a stack of cards for goodness sake.
Not meant to be harsh, just sayin'.

1) Plenty of 1952 cards out there in 8, numbered 1-310. Might be impossible to find the highs all in that grade and financially challenging, to say the least. But, man, what a ride it would be. I'm having a blast doing the set in vg, vg-ex and ex, mostly raw, all but a few are decently centered with great surface and eye appeal. The SGC graded cards are on the Registry under Mt. Everest.
or
4) Multiple sets could occupy your time and offer a break in the action to switch back and forth, especially as you near the end on a set.

Thanks brother. Anyway you go cant wait to watch your progress. Alot of my enjoyment comes from watching others build their sets.
Im getting closer on the 58 set and will continue to upgrade as i go along. Im nowhere near Boyd (boydstoys58's) on the registery when it comes to high end but i do enjot the build.

Not sure why SGC put the Sain/Page wrong back cards in the basic set. I don't consider the errors to be part of that set.
It's even more strange for the '59 set. In the basic set, they have all five no option/no trade variations (which I happened to have from my raw '59 set days), but they don't have the a/b/c Spahn birthdate variations. Plus they include the extremely rare inserts, which aren't even cardboard, at the front of the set. One I have and one doesn't exist as best I can tell. And I have contacted Larry Fritsch's people, Kit Young and even Levi Bleam a long time ago. I gave up.
Back to the '52 set. I was surprised at how easy the low numbers would be. There are lots of highs on eBay, but they seem to be high grade or low grade with not much mid-grade that I'm looking for. There's plenty of competition for all grades, so it's a fight to get every single high number.
I have to say the '52 set is a classic and you'll love it. Before I started it, I bought a 1953 starter set that needed some upgrading from a dealer/friend. I ended up sending it back because I just wasn't that interested. I actually helped him find a buyer to let me off the hook, but I couldn't get going on it.
Tony B. (cammb on here) is at the top of the Registry and he knows a lot more about the 52's than I do. He helped me get started with a large single lot sale back in December. Send him a PM. He's a big help.

Glad to see your back Matt, all sets listed are classics and you cant go wrong. My vote would be for the T-206 set, get out of the mainstream Topps/Bowman sets and give vintage a try.
Good luck!

It has been a little over 2 years since I sold this set, and the bug is back. I have recently settled into a new house, which was my intention when I chose to sell my '57 set. So while I did not fair too well on the sale; at least I was able to get a house I would never have been able to had the economy not gone south. On to the present/future. I see some new members on here as well as most of the vets. I am looking to build a new set, this time at a MUCH slower pace than the last. It could take a decade or two this time, so I need a little help in choosing. My problem is I like too many sets.
My thought process so far:
1). 1952 Topps (SGC 88-96). 2). T206[-Wagner, so it would not ever be a complete set] (SGC 84-86). 3). 1934 Goudey (SGC 92-96). 4). A combo of less expensive sets: 1941 Play Ball, 1953 Bowman, 1955 Topps.
Let me know your opinions. Hey Matt! Good to see you back! Been a while...but that's the beauty of this Hobby...it's always waiting for you whenever you take a break from it! I think the 1952 set is definitely high on my list as well as the 1934 Goudey set. I think both are classics from their respective eras. Good luck and look forward to seeing your posts.

You may (or may not) have more dough than me, but you certainly are willing to spend more dough than I am willing to spend on cards. I hope we all live long enough and avoid dementia long enough to see it completed.

Hate to stir the pot but you will always have '57s knawing at you, why fix something that is not broken? Rebuild your '57 set. While I like the 52s do you really want to plough hundreds of dollars into high #'s that could be used to purchase star cards? Also, I think the 52s have a lot of boring portrait poses/head shots and much of your $ will be used buying common cards, of common players whereas '57 has many more rookies, stars, etc. 57s are cheaper too

I agree. I've tried 52's, 55's, 56's and for whatever reason can't get interested in them and scrap the project. 57's to me are different. I could really get into upgrading my 57 set, but that's just me and the way I collect which makes the hobby so great. In addition to the rookies, stars et al, it was the last year the Dodgers and Giants were in Brooklyn and New York.
