I know of a few that would be interested in this topic. Mattbojo is the man with his posting of his SGC 57's. I know of two PSA 57 collectors, arnyvee and myself. Hopefully there will be enough interest to keep the thread alive and hopefully get a few more into the set. I don't own any SGC 57's YET so my PSA pictures will have to work for now. Theses two are raw I was planning to send in. The Yankees' Power hitters has a slight stain on the right edge and some on the back. It was rejected by PSA in the past.

Hi Dave,

Those are both nice. I will warn you that the majority of PSA 8s that would not crossover to SGC for me had gum/wax stains on the back of the card. I have only sent in 1 card to SGC raw, it was a '56 Topps: Ted Williams that came back as unable to grade due to evidence of triming(I cracked it out of a PSA 8 holder). I then sent it back to PSA, who also rejected the card. Since that experience I will only send PSA cards in their holders for crossover service. I resell or trade the ones that do not crossover. I will post pictures of new purchases and crossovers in this thread as I get them.

But, I will soon. As soon as I do, you can bet that I'll post here for sure.

Here are a couple more that I picked up as part of a 12 card lot....should they all be able to cross (and maybe a bump here and there?)....

By the way Dave, I picked up a Roy Campanella PSA 7 which I can't wait to see in person! Unless it has soft corners, this is a 'bumper' for sure! I'll post a scan when I get it. \:\)

I think McDougald and Shantz will cross to 84, Shantz might even bump to 86. Probably not a cross on Phillips (centering) and Surkont (bottom corners). JMO

I agree with bbo. Shantz may well be bump-worthy. McDougald and Phillips are next, with Phillips tight on centering -- I'd say that card is less than 50/50 to cross. I do not believe that the Surkont will cross.

Arny post the Campy scan when you get it. I think it is a very undervalued card. I have been on a cold spell lately. I haven't won a card in almost a month. I am down to 33 cards and they are not hitting ebay that often. I really don't have too many tough card left and only a few expensive ones.

Dave,

TripleSSS Sportscards bought the 1957 Topps "Lionel Carter" set from a Mastro Auction last year. They sold a group of them to sgcman and I was able to get a few of them. The remainder of the set has suffered a different fate that I won't mention here.

Arny, That is a great looking Campy. It is hard to tell from the scan but if the two left corners are strong I would just crack it out and try for a straight 8.

Dave, it has beautiful centering and the corners are pretty darn good. But, on the back (at the bottom) it looks like someone took their fingernail and tried to seperate the top 'layer' from the bottom 'layer' of the card and is lifted up just a bit.

I wonder if I should crack it and sit something on it for awhile to smooth that out to resubmit. Without that, it would be a straight 8 for sure. What's an 8 go for?

For a NM/MT Aaron you can reasonably expect a range of $560 - $900 with a more likely number of $650 - $700.

Not me! I like my cards the same as I like my women. Sharp and fresh-looking (like new) with no evidence of abuse, excessive handling or wear. A little off-centered is OK as long as she's not a total whack job, you know, miscut showing parts of another. No schitzo's need apply.

YUP, that Ashburn is Killer! I agree that nice centering can make or break a card. I won't go as far as the corners being chewed off, but I would much more prefer a dead centered card with a hint on a corner.

What am I doing here? Im a Football guy! If you 57 guys don't stop posting all these amazing cards I might be temped to get some myself! Nice looking cards bojo.

The Erskine looks solid. Let us know what that pulls. I do
think some of the cards with tilts if the corners have touches
also then they could be 6's maybe even a 5 in some cases.
Otherwise. I think you got 7's too.

Matt,
Great Koufax!!! What does the back centering look like? How does SGC grade the backs? The reason I ask is I have a Koufax that while only a 7 is mint in regards to the front and the corners but borderline miscut on back. If not for the back it would have been re-sub for sure. I know alot of people holding 57 Koufax's with borderline backs.

Dave,

Both the 96 and 88 I upgraded have off-center backs. If you have one with a Mint front in a 7 holder, I would send it to SGC.

Wow, that's a nice one.

Those '57s are really gorgeous. That's what sucks about message boards - if you hang around them long enough, your whole collection changes because you wind up starting a new set every time someone else posts a nice card.

Killer cards, Matt!

That Koufax is AWESOME!! That card has to be worth a pretty penny! Either you got way more money than me or your just as broke as me! Maybe Both! Oh well, I can find more money easier than a Koufax like that!

John,

The piggy bank is going to need something stronger than liquid nails to be put back together after buying the Koufax. But you are right, it is the only SGC 96 Koufax; so it will be easier to find more money.

I am going to jinz myself, but hopefully by the end of this week, I will have the 2nd 57T Koufax SGC 96.

Scratch that, I have a Spahn that is in with hopes for the 2nd SGC 96 of its kind.

Do you really have a Mint Spahn at SGC? What are your plans for it?

I sent it in under the crossover special. I will be very surprised if it does not cross. I plan to sell it, as soon as it gets back.

I will proudly announce the crossover and then post a picture. If you do not hear anything, then things likely did not fare well.

FYS- do you have any more 57's? I know a few folks that would jump on the right cards.

Matt- Your set is incredible. I am a proud owner of about 150 PSA 8 57's but some of those cards just unreal. Keep it up and I might cross my whole set over. Well not actually but I love the SGC holders now that I have a few.

My latest crossovers. The Dickson and Bunning were PSA 8.5s, the rest were PSA 8s. I had 4 that did not cross.

Matt,
Great crossovers. The Naragon is a tough. Let me know what didn't cross and if I need them maybe we can work something out.
I am going to the registry to take a look at the 57 sets now.

Hi Dave,

I trade most of my PSA 8s that don't cross with Paul Jas.. I had an Amoros and E. Johnson which just went in the mail to him yesterday. I still have a few cards available for trade. PSA 8: #s 133, 151, 295 and 354. The following SGC cards are all very nice, but have been upgraded: Aparicio(88), Zuverink(88), Pafko(88), Wilhelm(88), Hemus(92), Fowler(88), Orioles Team(88), Koufax(88), Hall(88), Neeman(92), Terry(88). I am also in the process of upgrading my Mantle, which I think you saw a scan of previously. I would be interested in any sharp PSA 8s to fill holes in my set.

Paul Jas.... He bids on every 57 card in PSA 8. I used to get mad at the fact that he already had the cards but kept bidding. He has a few nice sets on the PSA registry.

My latest batch of crossovers just came in. The Kazanski, Tuttle, and Bauer were PSA 8.5s; the remainder had been PSA 8s.
I had 3 cards that did not make the cut.

Those are so extrordinary looking cards! In the SGC holders they are now museum quality. Absolutely beautiful display pieces.
If there's anyone who thinks centering is not the #1 1st eye appeal quality of a card. They need to take a glance at these beauties.

Guys,

Good calls on the look alikes. I see a few more in this group: Pres. William Harridge & former Lakers coach Del Harris and Bill Tuttle & Buck Scholwalter.

John,

You are correct about centering, but a clear picture and sharp corners don't hurt either.

Great job Matt. The President card is my favorite. I have a nice PSA 8 but it doesn't look that good. I have a very short list of 23 cards needed to finish my set. LMK what 3 didn't cross and if PaulJ doesn't get them maybe I can.

Yes Matt I also want the whole 9-yards on a card. Them 88's and 92's have the whole nine yards!

If any of those 92's were off centered. I would choose to have the centered 88's. IMHO they would be nicer cards.

I have been a bit bored lately with the lack of available cards on the market, so I tried something different. I went through my set and picked out what I considered to be 15 high-end SGC 88s. I cracked these cards out and sent them to SGC "raw". These are the results:

Good news is you only have to send in 2 raw now. I would be happy with the results. I have done the same thing in the past but with PSA 7's. It is a crap shoot and too risky for me to try that with 8's.

Most of those 88's should have gone to 92. I think the 84 was a bit harsh, but it may have been the weakest 88 originally, based on what I see in the scan.

But, man, that had to leave a mark. Six up, two down and seven remained the same. Cost around $110 with the shipping and gained you maybe .01 on the Registry.

I, too, have played the crack and resub game. I do much better with PSA crackouts than SGC crackouts, leading me to conclude that SGC is the more consistent and correct grader.

Kinda like a company buying up their own stock when they can't be like Warren Buffet and buy someone else out.

Did you get those raw (at the National possibly)?

I hope the answer is "yes and raw meat such as this is still out there."

I collect 59's (SGC, averaging about an 87) and I know a guy who has a set better than mine, but his is raw and he will NEVER, EVER get any graded. The guy is over 60 years old, he's totally anal about his set and has probably instilled that in his kids so that they will NEVER, EVER part with them when he's gone.

bbo,

No, these cards were already graded by SGC when I bought them. BMW Sportscards does have an entire high-grade raw 1957 Topps set. Brian has only had a couple of them graded to this point, I got a SGC 96 Campanella out of it. I have been waiting MONTHS for him to get some more graded.

My expereince with Brian is that he will give you a price, once agreed, he will send it in to ensure the grade and it is then sent to yourself. They have tons of cream raw just wainting for people to buy based on request to be graded/guaranteed to meet grade.

Hi Matt~

THANK YOU! I got goose bumps reading your message about having a 1957 Brooks RC waiting for you! I am a BIG Brooks Robinson fan and that is above all my favorite! I currently do not have one, but I would like to! I love the 1957's - maybe more than the '58's - it's a toss up - but both sets are my Favs! How long have you been collecting the '57's? Let me ask you something - when you cross a card over (which I've never done) how exactly does that work? If it doesn't equal in grade will they crack it out of the casing or leave it if you state it must meet the equal grade? I have about 5 PSA 7's I would like to send in for my 1958 set but wasn't sure if I should take the risk or not. Perhaps I could sell them off and just try and pick them back up in SCG grade. What do you think? I think your cards are awesome and would like to see more. You did very well on the crossovers and I'm sure you must be pleased with that! What made you decide to crossover to start with?

Earl,

I always put a minimum grade of 88 on my crossover submission, which usually consists of PSA 8s and 8.5s. The cards that do not meet the SGC grading standards are returned in their original holders. I always resell or trade these cards off. I decided to go with SGC for several reasons. The vast majority of cards purchased these days are done so without seeing the card in person; the number one reason I decided to go with SGC is that I could expect to receive an accurately graded card based solely on a computer scan. This has proved to be far less the case with PSA graded cards. I will fore-warn you on crossing over cards, SGC is much tougher than their competitors. Personally, I automatically pass on about 9 out of 10 PSA graded before I find one I consider sharp enough to bid on.

I agree with Matt. I have been crossing over 1955 and 1971 Topps Football cards to SGC holders. I try never to buy a competitors card base solely on that grade. I look for strong cards not just the labels. Ive had pretty good success with my crossovers. Any card that does not meet your minimum grade will be returned to you in its original holder. Like Matt I will resell or Trade off the cards that do not crossover and try to find another card.

I was a bit hesitant when I first decided to cross over my PSA 71 Football set. I had about 25% of the set. The key for me was, If the KEY cards I had could crossover I would then go for the rest. I've had a VERY good success rate crossing my 71's and the number one reason was that I always bought the cards and never the Label. There is some extra expense involved in crossing your cards over, but I strongly feel with the superior service and product I get from SGC it is more than worth it.

Also note that you do not have to request a minimum grade. SGC will accurately grade and holder any crossover cards if you request that. I think you can request "No Minimum" I could wrong on this. I guess if you wanted to do that you could just break them out of the slabs and submit they as raw.

Now would be a great time to test the water with the $6 crossover special. Try a small batch of card.
I am planning on sending in 20 1955 Topps Football cards for the December crossover Special, as well as a few 71 Topps Football.

John

Matt,
Great cards. I am down to 16 to finish off myset.

92,114,122,166,171,240,274,280,303,329,330,342,391
and three big ones Mays,Mantle, and the Power Hitters.

By the way did anyone see the 57 Mantle prewarcards just auctioned off??? I think someone got a steal at $2400 and change. My wife put the nix on my bidding, but if I would have sold more cards leading up to that I would have just done it anyways. I just didn't have any extra card money at the time. I am now building up my paypal account for my next big purchase.

I had to grab a couple of wash cloths to clean up from all the DROOLING I am doing before I could post this! I think that is one of the nicest Brooks Robinson RC's I've had the pleasure of seeing! Almost perfect centering and crisp, clean image! There I go again, drooling all over my computer! \:D I certainly envy your collection Matt! You have some of the most beautiful '57's I've seen. It is a pleasure to look at them! Thank you for sharing it!

Hi Dave~

What auction were you referring to? Can it still be viewed? I'd like to check it out if I could. I try to keep up on the pricing trends and what things are going for. I've been saying for the past couple of weeks that a LOT of bargains are starting to show up! Are you seeing the same?

EARL

Would like to see some of your '57's too!

Dave,

I took a good look at that Mantle as well as the Drysdale. One of my prebidding tests is to line up a right angle (drafting tool) to the card's scan. These auctions had nice large high res. scans, which made this easy to do. These cards were not square, so I passed. Congrats. on nearing completion of your set, I am getting close as well. I still need a Mantle too.

The best thing is once you get a adultfriendfinder membership then you can
can automatically get all memberships of other sites that are offered by adult friend finder.
These are all dating websites, best thing is you can get points by getting all memberships
and then redeem those points to get a gold membership absolutely free.

Hi Matt~

I just wanted to let you know that there is a RAW 1957 Topps Sal Maglie up for auction that is from a set break that looks pretty sharp. You've probably have already seen it, but I thought I'd tell you anyway just in case you didn't! It looks really nice to me!

Sweet mother of baseball. That Joe Adcock is a BEAST. The deep reds and precise register/focus. I think I see the remnants of an old blister on his right thumb. And Joe needs to have that mole above his elbow checked out by a dermatologist.

Old Duke ain't bad, but then I have an affinity for the rough cuts.

Hey BBO - Did you see Bunning wink at you!;) Those are awesome cards Matt! BTW, what is your set registered under - or is it? I wanted to look at it in its entirety! Who is the guy holding down the #1 Registry set? I see he has everything locked down across the board! He wouldn't respond to an email! Nice pick ups!

PS - trying to work out a deal to get a group submission together. You interested bbo or how about you Matt? I am suppose to get back with Sean about it today. If you are interested let me know. Thanks~

I only have 3 commons from 59 baseball ready to go right now. Could have more by end of the month, but too soon to tell. Don't wait on me.

Don't forget to butter up the graders. It works. (See my thread on 59s to see what I'm talking about.)

My set is listed under 1957 Topps Basic Set. You must have sent an email to Randy S.; he has never responded to any email I ever sent him as well. I have already sent in 2 submissions in the last couple of weeks, so I do not have anything at the moment to contribute.

Matt,
Very nice Johnny P. That card has always looked weird to me. I ran thru a few 7's and finally got a 8 I like last year. The Wynn is unreal and the Ditmar is a tough card as well. I only wished PSA holders looked as good as SGC's. Either that or my set was 98% SGC graded and not PSA!!!
I still need 10 more to complete.

It's been a few years since I worked on a 57 Topps set, but Cimoli was the last card in 8 to pop up. Other tough ones were Naragon, Garcia, Lopez, Red Sox Team, Pyburn, Phillips, and probably a few more that I'm forgetting. The 300s have some brutal cards in there.

I Brian! I was curious as to whether or not you completed your set yet or still working on it? I think I may want to do that one next - at least I would really like to. In the order of favorites, that one is a toss up with the 1958 set. I think Matt's compilation is one of the finest sets I have ever had the enjoyment of seeing. He has done such a great job putting it together. Very nice!

Matt,

How is the set going? I am, down to 9 cards needed with the big boys Mays, Mantle, Yankee power hitters. I sold my Mays and will get a 8 this time around. I will probably go with 7's on the two others. I can't find a decent 303 Goodman.

Hi Dave,

Nice new sig. line. I just dropped a check in the mail today for a Hodges graded SGC 96. I have my eyes on a couple of cards in the Mile High Auction, you can probably guess which ones(but don't tell anybody). A few other commons (including a Yost I just crossed) are on the way as well. I still need a Mantle too, I am holding out for a 92 or 96. Too bad, I sold a perfectly centered Mays (88) a couple of months ago; you could have sent it to PSA. I have seen a few Goodman's actually, the cards I can't find are: Hale, Drysdale(centered with a clear photo), and an Aaron 92 or 96.

Matt,
I can't wait to see your recent wins. I should have bid on the better centered Mays 88 from that austion. It went for about $75 less than I was willing to pay. I picked up about 8 new PSA8's on ebay bringing my total to about 200 PSA8 and 200 PSA7's and I still need 8.

I have my eye on a few of your auctions. I could use both the Reese and Wynn as upgrades.

Dave, I had no idea you were interested in SGC graded '57s; or I would have tried to work a deal out with you first. You are staying just ahead of me on completion rate. The Mays (88) I sold on Ebay a couple of months ago went for more money than the Mile High offerings. I actually liked the 2nd of the two they were offering, the first appeared to have a weak photo.

I would probably cross them. I don't think I will be buying a ton of SGC graded 57's but I like the Reese alot. The 2nd Mays 88 looked like it had an exmt corner(TR). I did notice the Mantle had some serious focus issues.

STILL NEED 7 CARDS...

I have my eye on a few on ebay( not even tough cards)

I need a Mays in PSA 8, but would consider crossing over a SGC equal. I am gathering funds to buy what I am guessing to be the last card at this years National, a PSA 8 Mantle. I would prefer to buy it in person and since I only live a few hours away it might make sense.

Matt,
I had my eye on that Reese you had on ebay, man that looked like a 9. I thought it would go for more. What amount were you thinking? If you ever have any semi stars or others that you think might cross give me a PM. I am always looking for upgrades and have a decent amount of 7's that need replaced.

Dave, I paid $318 for that Reese last year; so I actually made a few bucks on it. There certainly have been quite a few Mantle's and Mays available in 8s lately. I am eyeing the centered Mantle(SGC 88) in the Heritage Auction, but I really want a higher graded one.

I just upgraded my Newcombe, so I have a SGC 92 available. It does not have the sharpest of photos however.

The 57 Mantle really brings back some memories for me. It is one of the first "Big" cards I can remember having as a kid. Of course it was in fair condition, but I thought it was worth a near mint price.

LOL that was easy. I have snipes on 92,114,391. I also have about 10-15 more "lower snipes" on some more 8's that if I win great and if not oh well. I sure hope you dont need the Braves team card too.

Matt you didnt have to worry about me on the Vernon, my snipe was too low. Did you win that card? I did get the Braves team card and another one I needed. Also, I worked a deal for a nicely centered Mays so I am down to 4. I might put a ransom on the Goodman because I havent seen a centered one YET.

Great looking Covington. Nixon must be a tough one to find centered if that one was acceptable to you. Centering doesn't bother me as much as the absence of color. Exposure on the photo makes it look kind of black and white.

Matt,
Did you get the Vernon crossed over yet? I missed another one on fleebay the other day. I didn't bid that high due to the slight tilt on the card. I did get a Goodman so now I am down to three-92,95,407. I think I will just hang out and start on my 56 set. I really do want to finish it soon just so I know how it feels to complete a 400 card set.

Dave, the Vernon crossed and I am headed out to the Post Office to pick it up now. That is good news on the Goodman. Too bad you still need 2 of the more expensive cards in the set. I still need Mantle, Aaron, Drysdale, and Berra to wind up my set.

Hi Dave! How's it going? It must be an awesome feeling to be down to 2 cards to complete the 57 set! I envy you, man! Next to the 58 set, that is also my favorite! I think it may be the next set I start working on. Would also love to have a 56 Topps set as well! Good luck! did you get rid of all your 58's? did you get them crossed for me? \:D Let me know..would be able to work something out if still available for a good deal! ;\)

I still need three cards LOL you had me 33% closer. I still have a decent amount of 58's raw, but no I didn't cross anything yet.

Saw Warren at a show about 10 years ago, maybe 15. Uglier than Don Mossi, I kid you not. One of the ugliest, meanest, unfriendliest people on the planet. Looked like he had been run over by an ugly truck with a back seat full of uglies. Uglier than the morning mirror image of a 15-beer pickup from the night before. Uglier than a pile of....well, you get the picture.

But that card makes him look almost human.

Bet it cost a pretty penny in PSA 9.

Edited by bbo (05/18/09 08:55 PM)
Edit Reason: add another ugly reference because he was that ugly.

Matt,
Great addition. I too was shocked at how "under valued" the Spahn card is in the 57 set. I have seen quite a few 8's sell for 65% of smr and rarely over 75%. I can't speak on the 9's, I will leave that to Matt.

Nice cards!

Just curious about ML was able to cross over a few PSA cards to SGC for you... Do they have more presence with SGC or better luck vs if you sent them directly to SGC?

Gary,

I/probably any good customer of Mem. Lane can go through their inventory and select cards they would like in SGC holders. M.L. sends them to SGC for crossover, the ones that make it are purchased; the ones that don't remain M.L.'s property.

Hi Dave,

I have not been on here much lately either. New girlfriend = less time and money for cards. I did pick up a super sharp PSA 9 Yogi Berra that is on it's way back to me in a SGC 96 holder. I will post a scan on here when it arrives. That leaves me with 9 cards to go.

Truly the FINEST 57 Berra I can recall ever seeing! The crisp registry of this card is awesome and centering is awesome! Great pick up Matt! I know you are happy to almost be done, but I will miss looking at your set and the updates I have enjoyed for nearly a year! Yours is the MOST impressive 57 set I have ever seen in my 38 years of collecting!

Hey John,

I plan on selling the set once I complete it. Now that real estate has become somewhat more affordable in Southern California, I am going to buy another house. Shortly thereafter, I will probably start building another yet undecided set. Nearly all of the cards in my '57 set have been hand picked, so you are probably right about it being one of the nicest sets around(regardless of GPA).

It is listed under 1957 Topps Basic Set (mattbojo). As far as what it's worth, I will work on that once it is complete. It still depends on what kind of Mantle, Drysdale, and Aaron I can come up with.

A classic Seinfeld episode. After several months I have finally put together a deal to acquire a Mantle and Drysdale both graded SGC 92. I will post scans on here when they arrive, probably towards the end of next week.

Yes, I got them from Nick. I am down to four cards for completion of the set. Aaron is the only star player I still need. Sorry but my Brooks Robinson card is staying in the set.

I just crossed this card over from a GAI 9 holder. This brings me down to only 2 cards from completing my set. I still need #307 (J. Phillips) and #406 (Bob Hale).

WOW MATT! That card is AWESOME! It looks almost PERFECT! Nice going on the crossover!

WHY these two --- I still need #307 (J. Phillips) and #406 (Bob Hale)? I mean are they very hard to find in high grade nicely centered? Or just happen to be the last two?

That is a nice Aaron.

I bet it is worth more now as an Sgc 92 compared to a Gai 9 even
though it is the same exact card.

They are both very hard to find in high grade. Unfortunately I just missed an ebay auction for both cards that looked like they would have crossed for sure. But at the time I had a couple of PSA 8s at SGC for crossing that ended up failing after the fact.

With these 2 cards I have completed my set. I have a couple of upgrades on the way, but all the holes are filled. It took a little over 2.5 years to get it done, working exclusively on one set. A fellow SGC Registry Member was nice enough to break up his set in order to sell me the Phillips card. I cracked out 2 PSA 7 Hale cards and sent them to SGC, one came back an 88. I predicted long ago that Hale would be the last card to complete the set, and it proved to be the case. It is one tough card to find in high grade.

Thanks to all those who have helped me along the way, and to those who have watched me build it on this message board.

Hi Matt~

I applaud you for the set you have assembled. I am amazed by each and every card you have placed in it! The 1957 Topps SGC Registry set you have put together has got to be the very finest ever...for most of the cards I have had the privilege to look at through your posts and on the registry have been the best my eyes have ever laid hold on! You deserve many kudos for your efforts and time spent in amassing such a collection. Also, I would like to personally thank you for displaying a scan of each card on the Registry so that we all could enjoy them. It was fun to watch you put this set together...I came in when it was nearly completed over a year ago...and how fitting...right at the time your most gorgeous Brooks Robinson RC came back to you from SGC! I will always remember that card!! Now, onto your next adventure (which has already begun for you). I look forward to following your next quest and seeing the cardboard gold you come up with! I'm sure it will be hard to top this set, but there's no doubt the set you are doing now will be stunning. Congrats for your completion! NOW...bbo's warning of last year kicks in...sell the set and he said he's gonna do some ugly things to you! \:\) lol Thanks, again, Matt! It has been fun!

REA is Robert Edward Auctions which will end on May 1. I hope the set does well, they did a good job on the write up. They seem to have primarily Prewar cards in their Auctions, but with any luck there will be a few people out there interested in bidding on it.

Hi Matt! How does it feel to be auctioning off a set you spent 3 years tediously putting together? It must be kind of bittersweet I imagine? I trust that REA does you well as for the promotion and successful sale. I doubt anyone will ever put together another set to rival yours...just my own thoughts. Thanks for sharing the thrills with me and everyone here who watched you assemble your masterpiece. Now that its on the auction block, I'm curious to see where the numbers finally end. If it doesn't go for over $125,000, I will be shocked! Good luck and keep us posted!

I understand your desire to sell it whole, with (perhaps) the hope of the buyer keeping it intact. But you could be leaving a substantial sum of green on the table.

I doubt a single individual buyer will push it above six figures. You may get a few guys that go in together and agree to split it up. That might get it up to the six figure level.

At an average grade of 91.1, that roughly translates to an 8.388 on the 10-point scale. At least five current sets on the PSA Registry exceed that numerical average, but I have no doubt whose set is the higher quality. Yours!

Here's hoping some of those Registry Chasers bid you up, with the intent on crossing to improve their lot in life. Though that would be a sad day indeed to break up a beautiful SGC set.

I agree with bbo that breaking it up would bring in a higher total price. In fact one reason to buy as a set is to break it up for profit, so it may be broken up sometime down the line anyway. Anyway GL on your sale.

Good luck on the sale Matt, while I agree with what bbo is saying about breaking it and I sell my stuff piece by piece, every time I have tried to buy an exhibit set at auction the last 3 years it goes for record numbers, gurr go figure. I hope you have the same luck.

Well Matt, I don't know how you feel, but I think whomever won your 57 set got the bargain of a lifetime! I don't know what you have into the cost alone, but it just seems that $65,000 is way, way too cheap! Hope it didn't hurt you too badly.

If my math is right...that works about to average $159.00 per card. I don't have a lot of experience with this set, but that doesn't sound like too much when you consider the cards and their grades.

I think a lot of lots in REA were very soft this auction. I won the lot I really wanted but I was following about 15 of them and all but 3 were well under what I would have paid for them.

I dont know what Matt's breakeven was but I hope he didnt lose a bundle.

The set definitely tanked in my opinion. It only received one bid on the final day of the Auction, at about 1:30 AM EST. That is horrible. It looks like bbo was on the money, I should have taken the time to break it up. I really wanted to keep it together though, because it is one amazing looking set. The winner got a steal in my view.

First rule of selling a set:

It's not your set anymore, so make it desirable to the most number of people as possible and don't try to keep it together. It's not like it's a family of orphaned kids, it's a stack of cards for goodness sake.

Not meant to be harsh, just sayin'.

Don't feel bad. You once owned the best 1957 set in the Hobby for longer than anyone else ever has or ever will.

It has been a little over 2 years since I sold this set, and the bug is back. I have recently settled into a new house, which was my intention when I chose to sell my '57 set. So while I did not fair too well on the sale; at least I was able to get a house I would never have been able to had the economy not gone south. On to the present/future. I see some new members on here as well as most of the vets. I am looking to build a new set, this time at a MUCH slower pace than the last. It could take a decade or two this time, so I need a little help in choosing. My problem is I like too many sets.

My thought process so far:

1). 1952 Topps (SGC 88-96).
2). T206[-Wagner, so it would not ever be a complete set] (SGC 84-86).
3). 1934 Goudey (SGC 92-96).
4). A combo of less expensive sets: 1941 Play Ball, 1953 Bowman, 1955 Topps.

Let me know your opinions.

First off, welcome back! Any of those sets would be quite an accomplishment.

1) Plenty of 1952 cards out there in 8, numbered 1-310. Might be impossible to find the highs all in that grade and financially challenging, to say the least. But, man, what a ride it would be. I'm having a blast doing the set in vg, vg-ex and ex, mostly raw, all but a few are decently centered with great surface and eye appeal. The SGC graded cards are on the Registry under Mt. Everest.

or

4) Multiple sets could occupy your time and offer a break in the action to switch back and forth, especially as you near the end on a set.

Hi Blackie. I must have been gone for awhile, I see you have a near complete set of '58 Topps now. Congratulations.

Hello bbo. The availability, not to mention the beauty of the card, is what has the '52 set at the top of my list so far. Believe it or not, the pop. report is fairy consistent (including the high #s). I am in no rush to complete this time, so I am less worried about the cost. If it takes 20 years to get all 407 cards, so be it. That is still about 20 cards per year, which should keep me entertained. The multiple set option would certainly keep me more busy, but at the end of the day I would not have a set as classic as the '52.

bbo,

I just took a look at your set. Now I am about 99% sure that it is the set for me. Nice work. Do you know why the 2 "wrong back" cards are on the SGC checklist, shouldn't they be in the master set category?

Thanks brother. Anyway you go cant wait to watch your progress. Alot of my enjoyment comes from watching others build their sets.

Im getting closer on the 58 set and will continue to upgrade as i go along. Im nowhere near Boyd (boydstoys58's) on the registery when it comes to high end but i do enjot the build.

Not sure why SGC put the Sain/Page wrong back cards in the basic set. I don't consider the errors to be part of that set.

It's even more strange for the '59 set. In the basic set, they have all five no option/no trade variations (which I happened to have from my raw '59 set days), but they don't have the a/b/c Spahn birthdate variations. Plus they include the extremely rare inserts, which aren't even cardboard, at the front of the set. One I have and one doesn't exist as best I can tell. And I have contacted Larry Fritsch's people, Kit Young and even Levi Bleam a long time ago. I gave up.

Back to the '52 set. I was surprised at how easy the low numbers would be. There are lots of highs on eBay, but they seem to be high grade or low grade with not much mid-grade that I'm looking for. There's plenty of competition for all grades, so it's a fight to get every single high number.

I have to say the '52 set is a classic and you'll love it. Before I started it, I bought a 1953 starter set that needed some upgrading from a dealer/friend. I ended up sending it back because I just wasn't that interested. I actually helped him find a buyer to let me off the hook, but I couldn't get going on it.

Tony B. (cammb on here) is at the top of the Registry and he knows a lot more about the 52's than I do. He helped me get started with a large single lot sale back in December. Send him a PM. He's a big help.

Glad to see your back Matt, all sets listed are classics and you cant go wrong. My vote would be for the T-206 set, get out of the mainstream Topps/Bowman sets and give vintage a try.

Good luck!

Hey Matt! Good to see you back! Been a while...but that's the beauty of this Hobby...it's always waiting for you whenever you take a break from it! I think the 1952 set is definitely high on my list as well as the 1934 Goudey set. I think both are classics from their respective eras. Good luck and look forward to seeing your posts.

Well. I almost decided to try something totally different, T-205. But in the end, I chose to go with what got me into this hobby in the first place: Topps. I just got my first 1952 Topps card in the mail today, McCosky (#300) SGC 92. Unfortunately I do not have a scanner at the moment. When I do pick one up down the road, I will start a 1952 Topps thread. Unless there already is one?

Would this, perchance, be it?

McCosky 92

You may (or may not) have more dough than me, but you certainly are willing to spend more dough than I am willing to spend on cards. I hope we all live long enough and avoid dementia long enough to see it completed.

Nice choice Matt, good luck!

I do have to throw in the why not do both and just take your time ) Thats kinda the way I do it and I think it lets you get better deals as you can pick and choose from a larger pool.

Yes bbo, that is indeed the card. I don't know about avoiding dementia. But, I am 41; so I should be able to finish this set while most of us are still around \:\)

Scott,
There is no way I could afford to do both sets. I am not a whale! If anything, I might do a player set on the side.

cammb,
Thanks, I got it for $450.00.

goldenhawk,
The '57 set has definitely been broken up. I have seen individual cards pop up for sale, here and there. I do not know who bought it.

Hate to stir the pot but you will always have '57s knawing at you, why fix something that is not broken? Rebuild your '57 set. While I like the 52s do you really want to plough hundreds of dollars into high #'s that could be used to purchase star cards? Also, I think the 52s have a lot of boring portrait poses/head shots and much of your $ will be used buying common cards, of common players whereas '57 has many more rookies, stars, etc. 57s are cheaper too

I agree. I've tried 52's, 55's, 56's and for whatever reason can't get interested in them and scrap the project. 57's to me are different. I could really get into upgrading my 57 set, but that's just me and the way I collect which makes the hobby so great. In addition to the rookies, stars et al, it was the last year the Dodgers and Giants were in Brooklyn and New York.
