Until recently, my primary collecting interests dealt with building and upgrading my raw 52-79 Topps, 52-55 Bowman, and 65-69 OPC sets. Within the past several days, I finally decided to start a pre-war type set as well, after picking up a few cards at a local show over the weekend.

Since I just started this, I wanted to ask you guys a few general questions on the subject-any input would be appreciated!

Has anyone else here undertaken this type of collection?
If so, do you focus only on HOFers? Or specific teams?
Do you look for a specific grade on the cards you pick up, or will you settle for any grade?
Would you consider buying raw cards towards completing your set?

I used to do a HOF type card set. It was a ton of fun. I would try and collect players in the best condition my budget could afford, trying to get one example of each HOFer using as many different card types as possible.

I believe I got as high as 175 HOFers and about 150 different card types, and then I found myself falling in love with certain types and buying multiple players within that type, or buying multiple different cards of the same player. I have no discipline.

Ultimately I decided to shrink my collection down quite a bit, and focus more on scarcity and a handful of different "side projects," all prewar. I'm still in the midst of downsizing.

If I had the willpower to stick to one goal, though, all I would do would be a HOF type card set. It's unbelievably fun, and you get to learn about a ton of different issues.

And yes, with certain issues, I did buy raw. Ultimately, though, the entire collection was graded by SGC.

When I was a kid I did a lot of type collecting, very fun. I mainly stayed with Pirates at first but then i fell in love with the T series cards and just have to have T209 and T-210's, then it was zeenuts and on and on. Focus was always a problem. One thing to remember on the old sets, some teams are not in any sets and many do not have hall of famers. that can be good if you want limits or bad if you are a true type collector. I never worried about grade, I just wanted a nice example (high grade can cost a ton on old issues).

The one thing I know about pre war type collecting is it can be very overwelming, unlike set collecting where you know what and how many you need, type collecting is totally different.

I had the same issue as Novocent in that I ended up really liking a couple types and ended up starting them. You will find that they are so many amazing obscure type sets out there its hard to stay focused.

In any case I highly advise trying it, so many cool sets you will discover. My favorite types cards of back then are some of the sets I am working on today, I loved things like Zeenuts, M101-4/5, exhibits, w-517 and all the t and e's.

I setup a my collection registry set with my type cards in it, I have photos of all the cards posted, check it out- http://www.sgccardregistry.com/set.aspx?cat=6&set=243&userset=0

Fun for sure!

Thanks for the responses so far! It sounds like this is going to be a nice little side project to work on.

As of now, I'm just going to try and pick up cards of players from my favorite team - the White Sox. I shouldn't have to worry about many high $$ cards of HOFers, although I would imagine that some of the Black Sox players fetch big money.

SMtJoy - thanks for providing the link to your type set cards; they look great!

Hey Scott
I am not a troll....you can email me at leonl@flash.net if you want to? Brian and Al can check my login too. Sorry if this was a bit of sarcasm. Of course I collect type cards....Also, you can check by my name here....most trolls wouldn't have joined this board 3 yrs ago and still be posting.....happy collecting.

ps...as far as posting on my chatboard (Net54baseball.com) I am up to over 650 posts. No one else is over 350....so I figured I would spread the wealth a little. I don't go on any other boards except this one and that one....

Hey Scott
I get enough problems over there. I don't need anymore trolls. The new registration system has worked very well (knock on wood) at keeping them at bay. SGC is still my favorite grading company (I do like BVG too) and I know the SGC guys real well. As a matter of fact I am expecting most of them to come to the Net54baseball.com dinner at the National this year, as they have previous years.

Back to topic....I thoroughly enjoy type card collecting and have loved every minute of it. I am a relative newbie in that I have only been doing it about 13 yrs....but I have been addicted to it most of that time so I have done ok...take care and see ya round .....best regards

WOW!!

Leon, I meant to say this earlier - thanks for providing a link to your remarkable collection! It has definitely inspired me to keep going on my White Sox type set side project.

I was at the National for two days and was able to pick up several cards - to go along with a few that I already had.

Also, your net54 forum has been a great reference for me to use as I get my feet wet in the pre-war collecting world. You and the forum members who post there are very knowledgeable.
