I wanted to add a thread for the TTM thread I started with a POST IT thread...post your favorite or new TTM pick ups here and share a little about them!

Here is one of my favorite autos although I did not get this one through the mail! Does it count if someone else sent it to me?

I got back two from Mussina today..the heritage I will send to Wang as he is pretty good TTM..

Then I got this Milt Pappas RC this past week along with a 1960 combo card that I have already sent out for another sig...

The Maz and Sandberg I recently got back from private signings...

And I purchased this Berra from a fellow TTMer last week...

NICE sigs! I really like the Sandberg RC and of course the Pappas RC! The 57 Topps MAZ RC is also nice! What did you have to give for the MAZ RC sig?

Maz was only 35 on cards in the private signing. He doesnt do much and I guess he will no longer do TTM. I was happy to get in a RC!

I was happy to get the Sandberg too but what a horrible signature. Nothing legible about it.

Hi Barry!

I was doing a little research on SCN and saw that no one has received a Ted Simmons TTM auto! I got mine back in the early 80's when I was collecting TTM's. I actually got the Joe Carter at a card show, but Drysdale was ALWAYS a GREAT signer through the mail! I still can't believe he died so young! I would send to him all of the time and Koufax back then would sign everything also! How times have changed! \:\(

That's RIGHT Barry! Milt hand wrote me a note telling me that Berberet was a 22# catcher and he only 175! Does this mean Berberet's card has Milt Bolling on it? And how about the story on BUD BYERLY's card? If that is Hal Griggs on his card does Hal Griggs card have Byerly's picture? How many cards did this occur with mixing up names and photos?

I received my Through The Mail autograph today from one of the great Brooklyn/L.A. Dodgers pitchers who dominated the N.L. for years...Carl Erskine! Along with the 58 Topps card he sign for me, he also included a card of his own that was personalized to me and to my surprise answered some questions for me in a short note he hand wrote! I was utterly amazed that Carl Erskine, at age 83 would take the time to write me and share some of his Major Leagur memories with me that included Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Sandy Koufax!! WOW! Needless to say, today I have become a HUGE Carl Erskine fan!!! I hope you enjoy this...

Hi Gary~

Glad you found some enjoyment through my post! I am thrilled whenever I can contribute in such a way for other collectors. I must say, when I opened the mail from Erskine today I got goosebumps reading the note he wrote to me! What an amazing person he is...to think of all the requests he must get through the mail and at 83 would take the time to write me a note and comment on my letter! I am just in awe of that! I have truly become a fan of his! This is just one of the many surprises you often get when you write players and seek out autographs through the mail. I have many stories I could tell you about my football HOF collection I did through the mail back in 1989. Some players are just so grateful to the fans and for having been able to play their respective sports! I am so glad I got back into TTM's!

Hi Tony!

Been a while since I've heard from you! You like my newest project huh? Back in the late 70's I became a big collector of through the mail autographs back when you could easily get Koufax, Yaz, Drysdale, Nolan Ryan, and so many other HOF's to sign your stuff through the mail! I remember as a teen collecting TTM's and I'll tell you I couldn't get home fast enough to see the stack of envelopes waiting for me. It was like Christmas every day! But, like so many other things, the older we get more distractions come along and you move on to what you think are bigger and better...it's funny because the friend I got hooked on collecting TTM's is actually the person who got me back to collecting now! And I'm glad I did! Once again, every day is sort of a surprise because I never know who is coming in the mail or what kind of surprises await me in every envelope!

I decided to start collecting a 1958 Topps autographed set because of my love for this year's design. There are over 250 living players still available to write to. It's amazing because most of the players from the 58 set were born in the mid to late 20's to very early 30's! That's something when you think about their longevity!

Keep watching this post and you will continue to see my latest pick ups! Thanks, as always Tony for your interest and support!

EARL

Earl

A very cool and unique piece you recieved.
In a hobby that often times seems to be consumed by
money and price guides. Every now and then you still see
something like this that touches more on a personal note and goes beyond the "whats it worth" mentality.

How's it going? I am glad you are enjoying the thread! As for getting started with collecting autographs through the mail (TTM's), it is so simple! All you need is a little time! There are literally thousands of athletes and entertainers who sign for free...all it cost you is the time to write out a request and two - postage stamps! It's that easy! I am having so much fun collecting autographs through the mail and the excitement of finding autographs waiting for me in the mailbox! \:\) If you need any instruction, direction or addresses to get going just let me know. I would be happy to help!

I am posting this separate because of the special nature of the contents. Whenever I write to a player, I generally ask them to share some career highlights with me. And on some rare occasions, I get something like this in return~

[IM

I like receiving items like this more than my cards I send off! It amazes to get a letter/note like this and to think a big leaguer took the time to chat with me. These are the priceless gems that make TTM's one of the greatest ways of enjoying collecting!

All my autos that I have are from when I was a kid (still hang em on the wall though)
none TTM...
Not many...
I have 8 x 10 's autoed from
Lou Brock
Terry Moore
and lol, I have no idea who the other guy is...
he played for the mets. his first name is something like Ron or Tom and it appears his last name starts with an H... lol...
those came from a cousin that lived in the STL area and did yard work for a guy that had been a agent or something of that sort...

On cards I have Andre Dawson and Bernard Guilkey that I got signed at card shows in the early 90's//
The Andre Dawson is sweet, it is a 1991 Studio with the sig in gold ink. Looks so classy...

my favorites thought are my Brooks Robinsons...
He grew up in around Little Rock, AR...
There was this huge card store growing up owned by a childhood friend of his.
He had a free signing there, needless to say, I have a ball, 8 x 10, and card signed by him...

ohh yea, I also have a rollie fingers auto card that I bought at wal-mart years ago.. The funny thing about it is, Brooks Robinson is the signature on the COA...

Those are some great stories! I really enjoyed reading about the autographs you have and the stories behind them! You really got my attention when you mentioned Brooks Robinson! He is probably my most favorite player from my years growing up. And speaking of his auto...you can't get anything from him for FREE anymore! Everything he signs now costs big dollars and goes to his charity. I'm not mad though and hope TRI-STAR brings him to the National next year to sign...I have never paid an outrageously priced signing ticket before, but for Brooks to personally sign my card...I wouldn't mind! \:\)

As far as getting addresses...there is a site you can join for FREE and pay the yearly fee. The site is called SportsCollecors.Net SportsCollectors.Net It cost about $15 for a yearly full membership which is the best bargain for what you get! The site is priceless for the true TTM'er! Check it out. If you need any pointers or direction on anything...just give me a shout! Be glad to help you get started!

Hi Barry! I actually have been waiting since 9-05 for him to send my request back with the $5 signing fee. I mean...the fee is totally acceptable to me and would have paid more if needed, but wasn't sure on the time factor or if I would get it back at all! Have you received any good TTM's as of late? I will be testing the waters again by sending Andy another 58 to sign, as I just picked one up a better conditioned card. I think I have about 60 58's that are signed and have to start looking to purchase more cards to send out!

I dont have much left out there that is outstanding. I am waiting for Bobby Richardson, Boog Powell (been a long time for him), Tiant, Hal Lanier, Burt Hooten, Paul Blair, Jim Thome, Steve Rogers, Kevin Maas, Jim Kaat, Jeff Kent, Al Bumbry, Carl Erskine, Mike Flannagan

This past week I did send out to Al Leiter, Dave Kingman, Gene Hermanski, Bobby Thomson, Dennis Leonard, Bob Friend, Lee Smith, Bob Turley, and Bobby Cox

And even though 99% of the time it is RTS, I did send a card to Sandy Koufax. More than likely a waste of money but every once in a blue moon, he will sign and return a card. He must take one out of ever 500 mailings LOL

Maybe this gave me some luck! Today I finally got back Bobby Richardson (87 days which is about normal for him) and Hal Lanier. Probably got Lanier back since the minor leagues have finished. Here they are and they are SPECTACULAR \:D

I got combo cards with both Richardson and Lanier that I will wait to post once they are complete \:\)

Also, I am going to post this and it MAY become available for sale in the VERY near future. Feel free to PM me if you are interested. It will make me sad if I have to let this go but I have a possible small investment that I will need to raise a bit of capital for.

Great returns !
I had the chance to hear Bobby Richardson speak at our church last year.I never asked him to sign anything though.
I am getting the TTM itch again, I may have to buy me a roll of stamps and start again !

Great stuff Gentlemen !
I bought some raw cards off E-bay to submit for a registry set. However, I don't think they are going to grade high enough for me. Therefore, I am sending off two tomorrow. I haven't sent anything TTM in several months, Looking forward to getting back into it and watching my mailbox everyday. BTW, the cards I am sending are of Greg Landry and Jim Hart, Should hear something back soon as both are great signers TTM, and I have received them both in the past. Thanks for sharing !

lol I dont send anything in penny sleeves. They are all in card saver 1s so they dont slide around and easily removed and put back. Luckily, no one has signed the card saver 1s. Friend returned very quickly.

Ask him if you can borrow his car. Or if you can spend the night in his guest room to save you on hotel bills. Or maybe a low interest loan to buy more cards.

There are a couple of sites...I cant remember what the one is that some guys use but I hear it is more comprehensive than just the big 4 sports....but I use http://www.sportscollectors.net . Its only 15 bucks a year and worth every penny. That's where I get all my addresses and people share if they had success or not. Some informative message boards also. There are a couple of TTM threads here if you search. One is a good "how to".

Hi Joe! Welcome to the SGC boards! Collecting through the mail is a very easy, inexpensive and exciting way to enhance your collection as well as collecting experience. I also use sportscollectors.net for all my autograph addresses and questions. And although it is not free for the full version, they do offer a free membership with limited use. It is definitely worth the $15 per year fee. If you need any addresses or more info on collecting TTM's feel free to contact me or post here and you'll be sure to get a response from me or one of the great collectors here!

Thanks guys! I did joing the website for $15. That is an awesome site. Once last question before I start sending stuff out and probably the most important questions. Do you guys use a normal letter size envelope or a large yellow one?

Thanks, Joe

For me, it depends on the players and the cards. If inexpensive cards, I just use a large and smaller plain white envelope. If Im sending vintage or more expensive cards, I used two bubble envelopes. For me, the added cost is worth it on cards I want to be sure do not get damaged.

Here's a trick I use whenever getting ttm autos. I usually send something in return to whoever I am asking for a auto. Since I am in Hawaii I send a small package of Hawaiian Macadamia nuts or a package of cookies. I have a higher success rate than my friends that don't. I though is that I am asking the signer to give a little of his/her time so it's only fair to give something back. I have gotten nearly a 1000 autos this way.

-Rick-

Call it a fair exchange or a bribe either way it works. lol

As for me, Joe, I have been using a large and small "pull & seal" envelopes. I like using the self adhesive envelopes for easy use (who likes licking 100 envelopes?) Also, I think the players like using them better because they are easier to handle (I'm sure they don't want to lick envelopes all day either ) As for more valuable items, I do like Barry (yankee07) and use a bubble envelope for protection. Hope this helps!

I can remember back in the good ole days when Yaz was still playing and one of my baseball heroes...he used to sign quite often through the mail in the 70's...now NO WAY! That's a great sig on his RC you got there...what is Yaz charging these days for a signature?

He's like 150 on balls and equipment..I think bats were 175. But in person, gum cards are 60 or 70 if you do it through the mail. Yeah, I paid big but he doesnt sign much so I figured I better take this chance cuz it isnt a HORRIBLE price to have a RC signed.

Hi!

Very happy to hear you enjoy this thread! TTM's are great and one of the most enjoyable things I collect! There is nothing more enjoyable then coming home from a day of work to find a pile of autographed items in my mailbox! The pleasant surprises you get sometimes are unbelievable like the note I got back from Carl Erskine! Keep checking this out and better yet, start collecting TTM's if you don't already! If you need any addresses of specific players just let me know and I will post them here for you!

Happy Collecting~

I just sent out some proset hockey to try and see what happens. Didn't really care if I never saw the cards again. Just a practice run I guess you can say. In the grand picture, I would love to get some sets graded and all the Yankees that I have been buying. I am just worried that I may never see some of the cards again. I know with the sets, I probably wont send out the hall of fame players for the most part, but some cards like Don Mattingly, I am a little worried. I hear he is not the best for TTM.

I have tried Mattingly, Didnt get anything back, So i wound up trading for a few Mattingly autos with another TTM'er.
I hear the best time to get him is at the begining of Spring Training, I believe he is with the Dodgers now ?

Mattingly is signing at the mall in Syracuse on Dec 12. Small flats, including cards are 79.00 (which is more than I paid for YAZ!!!!). I thought about getting an 84 Donruss. This price is actually 20 bucks cheaper than he was charging last year. I'll wait until next year to see if he drops his price again. With some players, like Mattingly, I refuse to pay what I feel to be too high of a price tag. IMO, Mattingly should be no more than 40-50 for cards.

Yeah, I was thinking of going too. But that does seem a little high. He is my all time favorite, but I can do a lot more with 79 bucks. Maybe he will come down in the future.

Earl, I see there are a couple of failures at the address I sent. Maybe he only picks and chooses? Use two bubble envelopes...bigger one to mail, smaller one for SASE. Here is the addy I used...

Thanks Barry! I read from the site SportsCollectors.Net site that he was a tough autograph. I had met Red in the late 70's when he was coaching with an American League team and they were playing the Indians at old Municipal Field. He seemed like a real nice guy. At least he signed my ball! I will try your suggestion and see if that helps. It seems like I sent my request to the address you provided.

I have a couple of questions for you guys.

1. Are there any players still alive from the 33 goudey series? I know, they would be around 100 but I wanted to ask anyhow.

2. Do I understand correctly that alot of the players or retired players will auto for a fee? How do you know how much and do you send it with the card?

The only thing that I have autoed is a ball by Bill Dickey. Im very proud to have it but thats the only experience I have so forgive my ignorance.

Welcome Mozzartusm
I dont believe there are any 33 Goudey guys left or at least left signing. If anyone here knows otherwise, please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, many do charge a fee. The websites tell if they do and how much. If you join Sportscollectors.net or startiger.com, they will tell you and you can see if people are sending fees.

Also, there are a lot of private signings. Most times the prices are much more reasonable than if you were to get them at a show. You can easily see who is trustworthy and who you dont want do to business with.

Hi Barry...somehow I missed that Orlando Cepeda RC auto! That is a VERY sharp card! Where did you pick it up from? Did you purchase it or send it off TTM? I heard he is a hard TTM/Autograph. Please tell me more about that card.

Hey Earl. Cepeda does quite a few shows, especially in the St Louis area for quite cheap, like 20-25 per auto. Actually, Tom Orr (Atomicsports) got this one signed for me. It wasnt his private signing but going to a show and he had offered to get items signed.
I picked up that Cepeda on Ebay auction for under 30 bucks. Cant go wrong there! So, with postage, I have only about 50 bucks into the card.
I have received a lot more autos that I have yet to scan so I can post. Ive been pretty busy. I better catch up cuz I have a LOT LOT LOT of stuff that will all hopefully be returned by March. Guys at spring training, fantasy camps, and private signings. Im spending a lot more than I intended but some of the guys are kind of tough.
Have you kept up on SCN on the private signings and in person signings message boards? Thats where Im getting all these people to get autos for me. The people I have used are all experienced and have good feedback. I doubt I will get EVERYTHING signed but even if I get half, its going to be quite a haul for my collection.

The majority were obtained either through the mail or in person. I have about 300 more that aren't slabbed that I will get around to scanning one of these good ole days!

I've also decided to start sending some card TTM. Until now, I have gotten all my cards signed in person. I have about 1000 signed soccer cards.

I recently got legend Rodney Marsh (former Rowdies star) at the home opener game of the Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. Austin Aztex.

While there, I got the former Everton, Manchester City star Adrian Heath - now coaching Austin. (My 3rd Manchester City player in the set)

My latest signed 1958 Topps I just purchased. Believe it or not, this is one of the toughest of the set! Ken died in 1982!

Thanks! I appreciate the acknowledgment on the set! I have about 340 different signed 58s now...I am amazed at how far it has come along. It's funny, but I have accomplished getting this set together in much less time than the graded one I sold and have 2/3 of it completed. I love having the set with each card and autographs from every player...very unique!

I was thinking just the opposite: "It must be ironic being fun." Aren't we talking about one of the most acerbic, cutting posters in the history of any message board? Whatever Earl is doing, he should keep doing it. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead.

Good to see no matter where I am or how far away I may be, I am still a topic for discussion! LOL As always bbo, it's good to see you maintain the flamboyance of literary genius as to give a jab to the scoundrels who are too smart to even know what you say! \:D Thanks for the little chuckle I found here just now! Irony is a two-edged sword isn't it Mr. Bill! It's not irony I'm thinking of though...what's the word? Oh yeah, KARMA...sure you have seen a little bit of that in your epiphany of wisdom!

Thought I'd share a little bit of what I've been collecting....

Excited to hear about the merger between SGC & JSA as any autograph collector here should be...all the slabs above some day should be seen in SGC slabs if the rates are reasonable enough to crossover! I am reaching the 350 mark in my signed 1958 set and just begun a 53 Topps signed set and 1956 Topps signed set as well. I will soon be adding the 57 signed set to the list...you are right bbo...I should be doing what I'm doing...damn the torpedoes ...full speed ahead! \:D LOL

I'm quite sure if the Bowman Card Company could have forseen flat screen TV's, ipads and Skype, they would have not put those players on those ugly brown TV cards. And the umpire subset? Are you kidding me? Who cares? How many dingers did the man in black hit?

C'mon, give the umpires their due....

But, back when Topps sold Fan Favorites, the autos came 1 per box.....I was hoping for Brett, Yount, Schmidt, anything of the guys I grew up watching...........

....I pulled Eric Gregg ---- the rather portly umpire \:\(

From Wikipedia, on Eric Gregg:

His call of Game 5 in the 1997 National League playoff series was voted by Baseball America as the third-worst umpire performance of 1975 - 2000 era. His strike zone was later measured to have been five feet top to bottom and an unbelievable six feet wide. One memorable call has him calling a strike on a pitch that was over the head of Fred McGriff. [emphasis mine].

Well I finally get to post an auto up, my first older auto. I just like when it looks like the player took time to write out a great signature, not sure I could ever collect modern autos as the penmanship is horrid-

That one thing I like about the players of the past, you can actually read their names. They really took pride whenever signing for their fans.

Unlike many of the younger players who's signature you can hardly read. My 3 year on nice can sign her name better than most of them.

Technically not TTM requests, but they were delivered via the USPS

IMO, the facsimile auto on the page has always looked sketchy to me.
