Hey to the board.
I just came here to see what this board has ...
I am TheHun on the Collector's Universe and ChiefHunChuck on Net54.
I collect vintage hockey and soccer. I used to collect all sports - but had to cut way back.
I still trade.

The only thing I really know is that Bobby Orr cards are like bars of gold. The only good hockey cards I have are both Lemieux Rcs (Topps/OPC)--hardly vintage but you got to start somewhere. I like the look of some of the late 50s hockey sets. If I ever get any real $ I might start chasing some of those cards.

Welcome to SGC Hun! Glad to see you here. I love vintage hockey, although I do not collect the sport...I used to as a kid though. Living in Rhode Island when I was a youngster gave me a good experience with hockey...big Bruins fan...particularly Bobby Orr & Phil Esposito!

You can't go wrong with the first few years of Gretzky O-Pee-Chee cards.
But the Parkhurst cards are really works of art - and a good investment. The set sizes are very managable (there were only 6 teams).
It helps if you like one of the original six teams - Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, New York Rangers and Toronto.

Woo hoo....a hockey collector!  Welcome. I mentioned in thread earlier in the year that I want to start either a 54 Topps or 55 Parkhurst set in 2010. Any suggestions or advice you can give???

I do not think there is a better valued topps set than the 1954-55 hockey (60 cards). Think of it as the 1952 baseball set without the Mantle rookie.
However, the clean design of the 1955-56 Parkhurst (79 cards) is wonderful. I cannot overstate the value of the rookie cards of HOF goalies Jacques Plante (x 3), Bill Durnan, Charlie Hodge and the cards of the Maple Leaf Garden and the Montreal Forum !
You might consider where you are buying from - Canada or USA.
Parkhurst is Canadian and I would say collectors there prefer it as it predominantly features the 2 Canadian clubs.
If you want a taste of all the "original six", than Topps is your goal.
Either way, they are compact sets for which you should enjoy the quest of completing.

Welcome! I grew up in Houston, so I am not a hockey fan, but I do enjoy looking at the cards - especially the '54s.
I can't view image hosting websites at work so I don't see the pics, but I can't wait to get home and look at them.

Hun, welcome to the boards. There are some great guys here and I have been blessed to have met a few in person as well. They will steer you in the right paths. I just got out of collecting as I have moved to my other hobby and pastime but you will enjoy it here. Earl and the boys and the General Rube will lead you in the right direction.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
It is funny that I came over here looking to see where Rube was hiding.
I still shift between message boards (same name on all) and have met lots of good collectors, but even better, kind folks.
I understand the decision to switch hobby focus, Blackie, I wish you well. But the beauty of these boards is you don't have to be an active buyer or collector to visit.
I'll try to post as much interesting things from collection - past or present.
Now blackie - hand me one of those Shiners as they roll by ...
