Been working on it a couple of years. EX cards are pretty easy to find and the grade makes it affordable.

Awesome set, are you going to put the raw cards in a binder? I've considered building this set but might just buy a few of the star cards, still not sure...I like that Aparicio and Mays amongst others

Congrats on nearing the completion of your 1956 set - it's a beauty!
Is your set a mixture of white/gray backs from #1-180? Once you finish it, do you have any plans on trying to make a master set?

Thank you, and yes, it is a combination of white and gray backs. No plans to do a master set.

I picked up a nice SGC graded Koufax and Campanella. I'll post scans this weekend. I am down to my last 6 cards. I had to add #208 back to my list as I bought one and it had ink on the back and I returned it.
Cards I lack: 5 - Ted Williams 30 - Jackie Robinson 33 - Roberto Clemente 135 - Mickey Mantle 166 - Dodgers Team 208 - Elston Howard 251 – New York Yankees Team
I've got my eye on a couple that are on eBay right now. I hope to have this set finished by the end of this summer (or sooner).

Very nice job on this set, it sure does have wonderful eye appeal. The cards you show are real beauties and by what I can see you paid particular attention to centering.
Since you're leaving them raw, have you cracked out many from TPG holders and, are you storing them in the Card Saver's you have them in now?
Reason I ask about the Card Saver's, I am thinking of doing the same and also thinking of making an ornate box that holds them out of some exotic wood species. Rich

Rich,
Thanks! Yes, I focused on centering - especially the stars. I have found some good deals on graded commons and semi-stars and have cracked them out. I just don't see the point in having graded commons unless you're building a registry set.
Yes, I am storing them in Card Savers, well actually the Ultra Pro equivalent. Then they're housed in one of the cardboard vault boxes. I've thought about doing the same thing with some type of ornate box. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to make.

Blackie, is the 1956 #150 Snider card a tough one to find? I picked up a raw one recently for a decent price. Duke of Flatbush was a class act.

You missed Koufax, plus Alston (mgr.) and maybe Billy Herman? (coach).

Blackie, I just checked out your 58 set on the registry. Very nice. I love the All Star cards from that year, especially the Teddy Ball Game, which you have in high grade. Great job.

I cracked the Dodgers team card out of the holder to display raw with the rest of the set. I didn't see any surface wrinkles or any other reason why it didn't grade a 5. It was a really nice 4.5 and saved me some money too.
I am down to my last 5 cards now:
5 - Ted Williams 30 - Jackie Robinson 33 - Roberto Clemente 135 - Mickey Mantle 251 – New York Yankees Team
Hope to finish it some time this summer. Up next will be '55 Topps. I have all the commons, but lack most of the stars. I'll post some scans soon.

The hill gets steeper the higher you go. There are some hefty cards on that short list.
The '55 set has a boat-load of rookies as I recall. The '56 is low on key rooks. Of course, you'll avoid the dreaded Mantle in '55. If I had to choose between doing one and not the other, it'd be '55. I think you'll enjoy that journey VTG.
