Cammb - I'm starting to think that you are putting me on. You are seriously contending that Koufax, who had 5 outstanding seasons and 1 very good season, is better than Johnson, who had 11 outstanding seasons, and Maddux, who had 10 outstanding seasons and 3 very good seasons?

No need for new age statistics here. How about old school stats only? Which of these three pitchers had the better career?

A: 303-166, 135 ERA+, 4875 K, 100 CG, 37 SHO, 4135 IP, 5 Cy Young Awards

B: 165-87, 131 ERA +, 2396 K, 137 CG, 40 SHO, 2324 IP, 3 Cy Young Awards

C: 355-227, 132 ERA+, 3371 K, 109 CG, 35 SHO, 5008 IP, 4 Cy Young Awards

If you say B, you are kidding yourself.

Dear Mr Fletcher, innings pitched says it all. 1800 innings pitched less than Johnson and 2800 innings pitched less than Maddux and yet Koufax had more cg and shuouts. I rest my case. Its been fun exchanging with you.

Marv, we have a winner! What exciting prize do we have for our runner up, Mr. Fletcher, as he heads back to Joisey?

As a lawyer, I have to say that I wouldn't ever want to rest a case with the evidence that you've presented. I'd have a very unhappy client.

But we can agree about one thing - it has been fun. And I think this has debate has run its course.

Glad you're not my lawyer. The judge would've tossed you out when you put slow-pitch Maddux in the same sentence as fireballing Sandy. The only thing those two had in common was the last letter in their last names.

Funny thread, I do think seeing a pitcher live does make a difference. I have seen Clements, Johnson, Maddox all great but the most dominate was by far Nolan Ryan, granted seeing one of his many 1 hitters was awesome. When his change up was on he made even the great hitters look foolish. That and you could hear the pop of his pitches from the concession stands, no way would I want to stand in the box with that kind of heat coming.

No, I agree that Koufax was by far better than Johnson or Maddux. My point is that both were better than Pedro

Another correct answer!
This test is really easy when you think about it.
Fear played a factor for hitters as well. With Koufax and Johnson, the hitter feared the velocity and location of the pitch; with Maddux, the hitter feared the umpire's ever-increasing strike zone.

As a former magistrate, your case would have never gone to trial.
