After a lot of thought and consideration, I am going back to collecting raw cards...for the most part. I am a mid-grade card kind of guy and the more I think about it, it just doesn't make sense to have mid-grade cards kept in slabs. I want to be able to feel them and enjoy them.
I have cracked out a lot of my mid-grade cards, mostly post-war. I'm not stupid - I'm not going to crack anything high grade or high value, I don't want to lose money. I'm also not going to crack any of my pre-war.
I just feel that having a mid-grade '50s Topps card just doesn't add any value to it by having it graded (certainly there are exceptions like Mantle). In other words, I feel as though if I ever wanted to sell them, I could get just as much (and maybe even more) for them raw as I could graded.
That said, I have started scanning a lot of the cards I've cracked out. Again, these are all mid grade, mostly SGC 60 or PSA 5. Up first are some '52 thru '54 Topps.

David those are some beautiful cards. I can see how that would make sense. The 58 set may be my only graded set as the cards still look good in Card Saver I's. The registry is additive though.....

If Sgc stock were publicly traded, it would have just dropped a couple of bucks.
I agree with your assessment about mid-grade 50's cards being just as valuable raw as in slabs. Especially with the eye appeal yours have. Just about anything below NM is better off raw if it's well protected from light/humidity/etc.
I'm hyperventilating over your '52 Roberts and Bob Lemon. Could you please put those to me in your will?

Nice cards, how are you going to store/protect them now? It seems to be a growing trend to go back to collecting raw. Maybe people are getting tired of "chasing the number" on the flip.

I store them in Card Savers (actually the Ultra Pro equivalency) and then in a vault box. As far as "chasing the number" on the flip, you couldn't be any more right. After all, when it comes down to it, do I care about how aesthetically pleasing the cards looks to me or some grader? I'm the one that has to live with it and I only care that the card is authentic/unaltered.
Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking grading by any means. But my point is that when grading a card doesn’t add any value to it, then why do it? They’re just as well protected in a Card Saver as they are a slab (unless I’m dropping them off the roof of my house). I will still use SGC to grade my higher grade and pre-war cards, I just plan on keeping all mid-grade post-war stuff raw.
