Ok, my last raw card thread got off topic, so I thought I would start a new one with my latest raw pick up (from another message board).

Not sure about that but I do know he had ONE fumble in thirteen seasons! Thats one of those statistics you hear and just shake your head at, Kind of like Joe Dimaggio hitting 361 home runs and striking out 369 times! The hell with 56 games thats just insane!

I know, I know,, Im out of my freaking goured!

I broke that Berry out of an SGC slab...

The Berry came from "Big Daddy Bowman" (Sorry Ryan) Big Daddy always had an eye for very nice eye appealing cards. Im not quite sure...... I may have got the Starr from him as well... yes I did break it out of an SGC slab as well.

Cookoo, Cookoo...... Oh no no no, I don't smoke it no more.....

He did have one leg shorter then the other and had to wear special shoes to compensate for it. And he only fumbled one time in his career, he dropped only two passes in his career.

I went to small show today on the north side of Houston and picked up some sweet '56 football. I don't even collect football, but I couldn't pass these up. They're all in the NM/MT to MINT range. I'll probably grade them on this month's special as I bought them to flip.

I also bought some decent '59s. Anybody here collect '59s?

Anyway, scans coming tomorrow. Too tired tonight.

Not intending to steal VTG's thunder, but to answer 33rd's statement, here's mine, scan taken with a very old scanner. The first time I submitted it (years ago), it came back 84. I knew better way back then and got what it deserved the second trip.

Yeah bbo just tease me with that. Awesome ford. That's a nice centered card. Kind of like the 56 ford it took me forever to get a centered 56. Still searching for the 59.

Just picked this one up from Joe's Vintage Sportscards. It was described as VG/EX, but it looks more EX to me. I emailed them before I purchased it to ask if it had any creases and I was told that it did not. Better than described?

I think with three bent corners, VG/EX is correct. Plus it has some yellow discoloration dots in the white borders. I doubt you will have it graded, but it would fit with my 1952 set in that grade, and be a slight upgrade from my raw VG card, so I would sub it if I owned it.

Sometimes I wonder about sellers who sell both graded and raw and why they don't grade one such as this. Maybe they did and it came back worse than they expected. So they crack it out and sell it raw for the grade they think it is.

I think it would rate a half grade for the over all look of the card of course its a scan but if not a five it should pull a half grade in my opinion.

That's what I was thinking too. If graded, it would probably be a 4.5, but I think it would have a shot at a 5. Either way, it's staying raw.

I'd had my eye on the one below for a couple of months and even made the seller what I thought was a very fair offer, but he declined.

Now, I'm glad I waited. And it only cost me about half the listed price because I used my quarterly eBay Bucks.

Good thing you waited, Dave. Thats not a 5. Typical PSA overgrading. 2 bent corners and left side nick. Like yours better even with the corners. Centering makes up for that. Good job.

I think the surface scuffing and wear disqualify that PSA card from a 5. SGC might give it 50 (4) or 55 (4.5) on a good day. I still say VTG's raw card is a SGC 50 (4). It does present well and will look great in 8-pocket pages or a CS-1. For $70 instead of $99, he did pretty well.

Thanks, guys! Actually he had the PSA 5 with a BIN of $126 OBO. I offered him $105 which was way more than VCP ($81.28) and he countered at $114 I believe. I passed and I'm glad I did. I got it for way less and like I said, my eBay bucks covered about half the purchase price.

Yeah, if that was Joesvintage, I've had similar exchanges with him. I offer above VCP and he counters way above, basically 10% off his original asking price. Then I hear my dog say, "Leave it!" so I walk away. Which is shame because I've done some business with him over the years. Nothing lately.

Focus, color, gloss, overall picture quality. AKA eye appeal. That's a baseball card. It's helps that it's my childhood baseball idol, the Say Hey kid. Takes me back nearly 50 years.

Looks like VTG has been busy.

I have to agree with BBO on the Ashburn card.
Nice pickup, but I think the corner wear keeps the card in the VG+ range.

In keeping with VTG's theme of Collecting RAW:

Here's four cards that Im getting ready to crack out for my Raw set.

Ive been after the Chuck Howley card for sometime and have had it for a few monthes now. The centering is what drawed me to the card, but Ive looked at it multiple times in the slab and deep down I suspected it was overgraded so Ive refrained from breaking it out.

The Bill Kilmer card is another Thats been on my list for some time. Centering and corners look very promising.

The Tom Keating card wasn't really on my list, but for $5.00 we'll see if it can upstage my current card.

The John Brodie? PSA 6? barring a crease or some other unseen factor the card as very nice centering and the corners look rock solid. It was a throw in with the Keating card so what the hay!

OK Im going to crack them all out now.........................................

That was quick!

Let's see now.

The Howley:

As I suspected. A little touch on the top right corner and edge, along with the registration of the card make it more a NM or NM+ card. Its very clean and still an upgrade to the card I had. I'll still be in the hunt for another.

The Kilmer:

Yes it was a keeper. It had one tiny surface blemish left of his head in the black circle.
Centering, corners and the overall registration of the card easily won a spot in my set over my reigning card. Mark this one off my list.

The Keating:

This was the real winner in the lot! A beautiful card that surely don't belong in an 8 holder.
The one currently in my set was a solid card, but being as nice as the Kilmer and the crystal clear registration it unseated my card and found a home in my set.

The Brodie:

While this card had no chance at unseating the killer Brodie in my set. The card had no creases and had darn near perfect centering. While the card had some surface wear its surely not a 6.
I think it was undergraded a whole grade an is at least a 7 NM card. It sure does present very well.

Overall I did pretty well here. Although I was disapointed with the Chuck Howley car, it still had better centering than my current card. unfortunately I can't mark it off my wantlist.

I was glad i got to mark the Kilmer off my list and the Keating was just a super pick up.

I'll keep at it

John

Nice Ashburn and raw Mays too.

Just a little off topic but here is my 52 Ashburn.
I like the ones with a rich dark green background.

Maybe for a bazillion dollars he will sell it. TC, that Ashburn is a blazing screaming maniac. The register/focus is darn near perfect. You need to keep that in the family for years way past your demise.

LOL....you guys are funny. Thanks for the compliment bbo. Would like to add a Robin Roberts
that looks comparable but have not found one (haven't
looked to hard either). Maybe do a 52 Topps Phillies team set too some day.

Some nice cards posted on some of these threads as
of late. I got to follow up with a couple from
a sub I made. Just have not been buying much these
days.

I would be just the opposite on the Ripken Rookie.
I prefer the ful card traded version as opposed to the tri- panel card. But I don't do baseball.

So I'll have to stay with these old school heroes.

At one time I had the crazy idea that I could out drink Sonny Jurgensen! I don't know what I was thinking!

Absolutely love the old school team logo's that skins logo would be crucified nowadays! Clearly the chief holding a tomahawk is stereotyping! Can't have that

You threw down some brewskis with Sonny Jurgensen? You have to elaborate!

Doesn't that Jurgensen card have the wrong logo? I didn't know he ever played for the Chiefs.

Lenny Dawson was my favorite qb until "Captain Comeback" turned pro. Lenny throwing to Otis Taylor, Chris Burford, Fred Arbanas and a backfield of Abner Haynes, Mike Garrett, Curtis McClinton and Ed Podolak. Now that was football.

BBO, No I didn't throw any brews back with Sonny. It was just a funny thought.

I hadn't notice the Logos on the Redskins and Chiefs cards being the same until just now. I will have to check the others in the 69 set.
Topps may have just used generic logos then.

As for the cards and their spectacular condition?

While I had some killer 69's myself, I purchased a parcial set from Board Member Mike Tavenner(shouldvebeena10) Mike is a great guy with a great eye for cards. He was one of the first Raw guys I seen cracking slabs for cards. Like the 76 set I got from him, the 69's were just spectacular cards. I still need the Csonka Rookie and a few other Stars as well and this set will be the bomb!

Heres a few Ive added since getting the set from Mike a year or so ago.

Too bad about the scuffing on Johnson, Lee May, Bill Hands/Randy Hundley, Gagliano and Roof. I don't think the centering is that bad on Pascual and Peterson. Could have bought more just like 'em if you still had that $120.

Not scuffing. It's very light snow. Still doesn't take away from the overall eye appeal. Trust me, they're better than any of the overpriced garbage listed here...

http://www.sgccard.com/boards/ubbthreads...rue#Post2009086

And far as buying more, there weren't any more to be had in that condition. He had some that were Ex/Mt+ and I may go back for them later, but I'm not sure.

Edited to add: I know it goes against your D!CK HEAD nature, but if you won't say anything sarcastic to me, I won't say anything sarcastic to you. After all, I don't make fun of your crappy '59 Topps - the worst card design of the '50s. Yes, Mike you are number one on the '59 Topps set registry. Wanna know why you're number one, Einstein? Because nobody else collects them. Newsflash: Stuckemeyer is dead. His set is going nowhere - other than to be dismantled. It's easy to be number one at anything when there is no competition. Duh!

Isn't envy one of the seven deadly sins?

Why so much hatred, so much anger? If I'm Einstein, you must be Galileo, gazing at the stars. I'm not the one who posted about FREE MONEY! and bragged about laying $200 on a "sure thing" +23 Mississippi State, then having the Galileo-complex to show my ignorance that MSU would beat Alabama outright.

What takes the cake and shows who the real D!CK HEAD is, is you misquoting & rewriting my posts when everyone here can read.

Finally, you have to be the most insecure, thin-skinned head case ever to grace a message board. You really do rival some of the CU-fools that live to get into cat-fighting pizzing contests in an effort to recover lost manhood, when all you do is castrate yourself over and over and over again.

It's pretty entertaining, really. I hope you keep it up. It's quite a memorable distraction, believe me.

Great thing about raw cards: Everyone gets to proclaim with metaphysical certitude what the grade is, no matter what the condition or characteristics of the card are. Dealers at shows used to do that prior to about 1999 or so. Those same dealers HATED and DESPISED the grading companies. Where are they now? Either OOB or TPG-certified dealers. lol

But I don't collect 1951 Topps, so how bad can that set really be? If I collected it, wouldn't the values be reflected in the price guides with down arrows? Help me understand the logic.

Thanks for the compliment on the card and I agree that his stuff is undervalued. I met him at a show here in Houston in the mid '80s. He was one of the first autographs I ever got (may have even been the first).

I just picked up these two for my Colt .45s collection. Unpunched. I'm not a fan of oddball cards, but I really like these for some reason.

Johnson looks like an 8.5 and Aspromonte looks like a 9.

Thumbs up on the Sayers guys!

I don't know how many I looked at before settling on this one. The main problem besides the usual Topps centering issues, was Print dots. It plauges many of the 69 Topps Football cards with those brightly colored backgrounds. It is very distracting to see even one of those print dots on a card like this, because it stands out like a sore thumb.
