Some of those are keepers. Even if they are short, as Presentation Sets tend to be. Be prepared for some Minimum Size rejects if you're not careful.

I particularly like your Kaline, which seems devoid of the tendency to have fish eyes and print snow. Brock and Stargell are also nice.

I had never heard of a presentation set til about a yr. ago.I bought this set in 1978 & it always looked like it was printed yesterday but i did notice some were short so i thought i had gotten conned in 78.Im leaning toward getting it graded but its a pretty big set.I keep changing my mind on what to do.If i get it graded i probably wont sell it so im leaning toward SGC.Like BBO said its a crap shoot with this set.LMK what u guys think.

I might grade stars that "measure up" or appear oversized compared to the others. But I expect a TPG to hammer those colored bottom corners and SGC will be merciless on any print snow and surface flaws. Still, pick out the best of the best and send 20-25 in and see what happens. You can always crack and return them to their raw Presentation form. CS-1 holders would be ideal. Nine-pocket pages would show well, if you store them right and handle them carefully.

This is an email sent to me by a more knowledgable collector than i am.
Presentation sets were issued from 1959 to 1968. Each series was "presented" to the recipient with each series in their own box as a complete set. They were an early form of a factory set. In the case of 1963, there would have been seven boxes. A 1963 Presentation Set in the most common to find. The boxes are very beautiful. Executives, writers, players, etc. were given these sets. Most of the time, the sets went home and were placed in a drawer or a closet some where and forgotten. There can be problems with Presentation Sets. The cards were tightly packed into the boxes usually resulting in several cards on the ends being damaged. Centering can vary, and the cards tend to be under sized. Then again, some of the hobbies top graded examples of graded cards came from these sets. I can pretty much promise you that if you own high grade cards from this era that some of the cards came from Presentation Sets. In the case of your 1963 set, I can pretty much guarantee that cards from Presentation Sets are within your set. My 1963 Topps Yogi Berra in a PSA 8 came from a presentation set.

I have no inside knowledge, but after 20+ years in the hobby as an adult, I've been around lots of dealers and collectors who have passed down information on Presentation Sets. Some of it may actually be accurate. Here is what I've concluded.

I don't believe Presentation Sets were issued past 1963. The 1963 set is the most common set seen. They are said to have some sort of different coating or gloss (~Tiffiany coating?) but that is not true either. The bulk of the cards that survived were so untouched that they just looked super glossy. Kids didn't collect them. They were given to adults as an investment or premium. Some were given to players in lieu of commission for using the players' picture on the cards. As late as the mid-60's Topps only paid $25 - $125 for the right to use a player's photo. Some players took the cards or other items from a catalog instead of the money.

The Presentation sets were produced much fewer in number than the other Topps cards. I've also heard a different kind of blade was used to cut the cards from the sheet, rotary vs. a straight edge. Personally, I doubt that but I'll let others argue over that point.

Early days of grading were unkind to those cards. PSA (Rocchi and Baker) resisted even slabbing them and when they did, they gave a lot of 7's and 8's even though the cards were much nicer.
