Hello! I'm new here and new to grading in general. I've been collecting on and off since my dad and I started in 93 when I was 7 years old. Over the years I've built up a small collection and want to pass it on to my son when he gets older. I have nothing but modern cards ranging from all sports. I want to be able to preserve the cards as best as possible. My question is will getting them graded help preserve them better than the hard cases they are in now? Is there any other reason I should get them graded? Sorry for rambling on and thank you for your help in advance.

Well first you have to figure out what you have and what your intentions are. My advice would be if your collection is mostly modern than figure out what KEY modern cards you have and then find someone you trust to help determine the condition of the card before you send it for grading. I am pretty sure most of us here would tell you that a modern card needs to come back from a grading company as a mint card to really retain value. If value is your only concern my advice would be get rid of the modern and look at getting some vintage stuff. It has been proven to retain value and even increase over time. Or you could just do what I try to do start a collection for your boy in hopes that he will one day decide to start collecting with dear ol dad! My son is starting to come around a little.

Professional "slab" grading is for preservation and resale, that's about it. Grading runs $6 to $12 per card, so take that into consideration. On the modern stuff (80's and newer), I might grade limited edition, low population cards and maybe autographed cards. Possibly rookie cards of potential HOF'ers.
Pick out your best condition cards that fit the above categories and send 10 or 20 in and see how you do. Word of warning: you may be disappointed the the graders aren't as fond of your cards as you are. That's part of the learning process.
Finally, let us all know how you did. We'll rejoice or cry right along with you. Really.

Welcome aboard. If you decide to send in some cards use only one of the top notch companies. SGC is near the top of qualified companies.

My main concern is maintaining the cards so if and when I do pass them down they will be in good condition. I don't have any autos worth anything. If anything I have some RC that I would send in. I'll separate what I think is good and bother you guys for your opinion again. Thank You everyone for the awesome answers!

I agree with BigRedOne, I'd keep all of that the way it is. Nice stuff there, that Puckett looks real nice, a modern favorite of mine. Ripped open alot of those!

Pretty difficult to tell from that scan, but when in doubt, grade all Mantle cards.

At least all regular issue cards during his playing days and yours is on that list.

Even raw folks should appreciate a TPG giving it a grade and confirming that it is not altered. Both accounts have subjectivity, but better than running through life raw dogging it. They can always crack it out and tape the label on the back of the card saver. I have a few of those.

Looks like a "4" from here. Probably get your fee $ back and a few bucks more if slabbed if you plan on selling it

Just requested a submission kit. I will be sending this card in. Thanks everyone that replied. Perhaps I could do a guess this grade on this card? But probably got to wait a good month or 2 before i respond back. Im hoping it be a 6 or better. This weekend, i hope to put up better pics, i have a wi-fi all-in-one, but have not figured how to scan wirelessly from it. SO i just take pics from a camera.

For the most part I am one of those raw folks, but as FYS said, I would grade any regular issue Mantle.

Looking at your card im thinking it should range out in SGC 40-50 range brother

U needa to do the "CROP" thing on your scanner to eliminate the "extra" area in the scan. This should cause the scanned image to be larger. Also - once you have the image cropped and scanned then Google Picassa is a pretty nice free photo editor.

Hi, first time posting. I purchased the card above (1948 leaf dimaggio) on a respectable online auction house with the description of it being trimmed. The scans looked great so I inquired more about the card. I was told by the owner of the company that there was evidence pointing to the card being cut from an uncut sheet, not maliciously trimmed to improve its condition. My question is that I have a bunch if vintage I have ready to send to sgc but I wasn't sure if I should just ask for the dimaggio to be authenticated off the bat and slabbed or should I try to have it get a numerical grade and if it is found altered then it would still be slabbed in authentic case..? Would sgc give it a numerical grade if the dimensions were not exact because it was manually cut? Thank you for the input...

Hi and welcome to the boards!
Nice Dimaggio.
On the grading, it does not matter who or when it was cut if SGC or PSA for that matter determine it was cut/trimmed it will always grade an Auth. A card does not always have to match the standard size but it must have a factory cut in order to grade a number.
I think your Dimaggio is well worth grading even if it gets an Auth, valuable card in any grade. The added value graded in this case is a future buyer will know they are getting a real 1948 Leaf Dimaggio and that added piece of mind on an expensive card is worth it.
Plus that card will pop in an SGC slab!

Thanks.... I'll probably just ask for it to be authenticated and not even waste their time trying to grade it first. It's really a great card despite the fact it being manually cut... No creases, corners are nice and edges. They said it didn't appear to be cut recently so it does have an aged look to it and it's not unusually crisp for its age. I will try to post pics when I get my order back when I submit. I held off on submitting because it was either the dimaggio or submitting my cards. I picked the dimaggio. Off the top of your head does sgc always run monthly specials? I was gonna try to take advantage of Decembers specials but gonna wait for another special...

Good to here Scott.
When sending it in, it is the same to ask for grading or authentication, you will need to check the box to slab any card even if its an Auth thou. Worth doing because SGC might determine it is a factory cut and it will get a number, I have had a small number I though might be trimmed come back graded.
On the specials, they do change every month. So be prepared to wait a few months to send in cards under a special, imo its worth the wait.

Unless it is a T206 Wagner, then different rules may apply.

According to eBay, that card is the 4th most commonly counterfeited card.

One last thing, if you've never returned a card for a refund, you may want to educate yourself on that so you do not get burned. There are procedures that you have to follow to ensure you get your money back. Plenty of board members here (myself included) will be happy to help you. Just let us know.

Interesting. I've never seen that card where the sleeves match the cap, but obviously there are other known examples. It seems to me that the black cap is way more common than the blue cap. To me, that should be catalogued as a variation. If it were only a minor color variation, I would guess maybe the ink was running low and what was supposed to be black turned out blue. But it's not a minor color variation. It's a totally different color. Again, I'm not sure why that's not catalouged as a variation. Good luck with your submission and let us know how it turns out.

It is an issues with a lot of reprints but I usually look for cropped picture more so because the colors can vary a lot. I think its real but im no expert, another reason to send it to SGC and get it slabbed.

Thankfully, sounds like disaster averted. Too bad this had to be aired out in full view. If it were me, I'd have preferred PM or email rather than false fire alarms in a crowded theater. You may feel differently. Sounds like you've got it well in hand, regardless. Carry on.

I have collected this issue and believe me there are so many color variations that it would be impossible to list. However, that should be listed as a color variation because of the cap. There is one listed now, #42. I believe that the Dimaggio should be listed as a major color variation.

I know no one on this forum wants to see anyone spend hard earned money on a reprint or fake. I know the amount of Exhibit fakes out there is unreal, I always hate telling someone his Mantle exhibit is fake, tough lesson to learn.

+1
A lot of us have seen it many times here (and other chat boards such as Net54) when a board member shows off a new card purchase, only to find out it's a fake. There's no shame in it.
However, when this happens time is of the essence to get your money back - especially if it's an eBay purchase where the buyer protection is only good for a certain amount of time.
Most all of us have been taken at one point or another. A couple of ones that come to mind just off the top of my head were the fake Cobb auto that Joey purchased and the T206 Tinker reprint that Pat purchased. It happens even to hobby veterans.
Heck, I purchased a '57 Clemente that looked NM in every way and when I posted a scan Pat showed me a crease on the back that I had overlooked so I returned it for a refund. That card wasn't a reprint, but my point is that some times it helps when other people look at your stuff because you might miss what others may see.

Let me also say I've just joined a few days ago and I've already gotten so much more and better advice than any other sites I've been on ( one that starts with B for example)

That goes double for me.
Heck, I have been here a WEEK and already have more knowledge then I got thru YEARS of collecting. Mostly from Blackie, but others by just reading their posts.
2 things, I worry if I get screwed before, AND, I now know to come here before making any transactions and just simply ask. Folks on here are just so dang cool and honest.
