I agree that SGC is the most consistent, they are great on turn around times and there holders present cards the best IMO.
I have to say PSA is my second choice but I won't say they don't dictate the hobby.....they do I just prefer SGC and think they will close the gap with a few moves the board members always discuss here.
BGS/BVG can be good to ( modern just as Rob said) but If given the choice I'll take a card in an SGC or PSA holder over them 100 percent of the time.

I would not trust BVG with vintage, modern ok. PSA typically has better resale value for post-war cards and IMO are pretty consistent. SGC is also consistent but maybe too lenient on higher grade NM-MT stuff. SGC better customer service

Many are content to settle for the inconsistant cards in PSA holders because they are:
1- Obssessed with making their Registry set look better regardless of the actual card in the holder.
2- The precieved value of the card is more important than the card itself. Often PSA gain higher values( see reason #1)
There really is no "Best", Just personal opinons.
Actually the Best is RAW
John
I couldn't agree more, especially "The Best is Raw."

Bob Dylan.
Times, they are a-changing.
1999-2006 or so, PSA was best, most accurate. 2006-2011, SGC surpassed them for consistency, as PSA was overwhelmed with volume, suffered incredible grader turnover and began pursuit of screw-the-customer policy of half-grades. 2011-present, no one deserves the honor, IMHO. Beckett?? Please! Dr. Jim should've stuck to price guides.
