Grading mid-grade vintage??

have been reading the forum off and on for a while but have never posted. I realize part of what I am asking is repetitive, but I want your opinions of my specific case.
I collect vintage baseball. I recently completed a 1953 Topps set. It probably averages out mid-grade overall, with some a little better, some a little worse. Some of the set is graded, but most of it is raw. Most of the major star cards are graded, but not all. Now, I have a 1950 Bowman set underway. I recently purchased the Jackie Robinson in the set. It is raw and probably grades out ex/ex+. Would I be wasting my time and money getting it (and those 1953 Topps stars) graded? I am a collector, not a dealer. I love the hobby and am not looking to sell. I know this stuff is solid,mid grade,probably in the 4.5-6.5 range. I have collected for20+ years. I have had experience with third party grading, most of it PSA. If I do anymore grading, it will be with SGC. I know many of you have some definite opinions on this subject. What do you think about my case??
Generally speaking, I like 1950s baseball. Most of the stuff I collect, I can afford mid-grade or sometimes a little better. I look for cards free of creases, markings, stains, etc. I have learned to live with a little corner/edge wear. Sometimes I compromise on centering if it is the right card. I buy raw or graded, it just depends on the situation. I will never be hung up on registry sets, but I often have my stars graded and commons ungraded.
Sorry to ramble! What do you guys think? Send to SGC or not???

I think its always smart to get the stars graded from mainstream 50-60's sets, that's what I do even if mid grade or less. It protects them, lets you share them with others and if anything ever happens to you it will help the person selling them off get the most for them.
I have my personal cards from growing up all graded and I love that I can hand them to my nieces and nephews and let them look at them and not worry. Here are a few-

Love the Clementes!! Thanks for your reply. You actualy made me feel better. I really try and focus on getting higher grade stars and either buy them graded or get them graded..I will use SGC for that. That is what I did with the 53 Topps...I still have a few stars to get graded. As I start this 50 Bowman set, I am making sure the stars are graded. The commons I can get pretty cheaply in the EX range for not much money. If I find graded commons cheap enough, I will buy them. Otherwise, I buy raw, respectable commons in the EX range for not much money. I know some grade their entire sets, which is great if you have the $$. I can't really afford to do that, especially since many commons aren't worth much more than what it costs to grade them. To each his own on that. I love this hobby and don't believe there is a wrong way to do it.

Thanks, 33rd. These SGC forums are terrific! Where I live, there are next to no card shops. Add to that the fact that of all my friends, I only have one who is a collector. My wife basically tolerates my hobby at best. It is my passion, and I very seldom ever have anyone to talk to about it.

Im in the same boat as you are. The last card shop we had closed around 4 years or so ago. It was sad. Ebay and the boards are the only way i can get cards anymore.
