Someone helped me out a while back on the number of different "flips" that SGC has issued over the years...

(1) SG on the front
(2) SGC on the front, but no 1-10 grade
(3) SGC on the front with 1-10 grade + gold label on the back
(4) SGC on the front with 1-10 grade + SGC pressed into the back

So my question is - Does anyone know what years were associated with each flip change?

Can't give the exact years, but here's a rough guess:

1) pre-1999
2) 1999 - 2004
3) 2005 - 2008
4) 2009 - present

For more accurate dates, contact SGC.

Did the company start in 98 then? I was thinking it was 99.

Don't know the answer to that one, but I thought the original company was called SBC, and started earlier than 1998.

After some internet research, I found that the current company SGC did start in 1998 and Derek Grady started grading for them that same year. He later became head grader, famously won a grading competition put on by PSA at a National Convention, and then became associated with an auction company, along with another former SGC grader, Lee Iskowitz.

It was April of 98 I believe that they opened the doors. They deny any relationship with SBC from the early 90's. Back in 98 there was still royalties to be paid so I believe they just used the SBC way of grading to try and avoid those royalties? Also Joe Merkle was a partner in SBC and he was instrumental in starting SGC so there is some relationship there.
The first SGC label had the SG with a long bar code centered on the bottom. That changed soon after.
Lee Iskowitz used to sell tons of SGC cards on Ebay but can't remember his ID?
Also OTWcards on CU is an ex SGC grader also.

So I'm guessing this is an example of the 1998 version. Did they all have the gold label on back also?

I wish SGC would have used this label and system but it will never happen. I love these flips and holder combo the best. I have seen a few of these over the years. By the looks of it they must have opened their doors in January of 90 and actually put the date on the label. First one I have seen with the date on it.
