I attend shows ever chance I get and always racking my brain on new ways to uncover NM or better cards.

If you attend shows, how social are you?

Do you ask the fellow collector on the side of you what they collect in hopes to add the next new card to your collection?

Do you have dealers holding cards that might interst you?

Do you advertise on chat boards?

Do you find collections at yard sales?

Looking for new ways to find cards...

I attend the TriStar show here in Houston twice a year (it's coming up later this month). I also attend smaller shows throughout the year, but a lot of those dealers have the same old inventory, show after show after show. There are some shows in San Antonio and Dallas a few times a year too and those are pretty decent.

I list WTBs, mostly on Net54.

I have dealer friends here in Houston that know what I'm looking for and will usually give me a call if they pick up something I like.

This just came up yesterday as a matter fact.
I saw on Craigslist, a guy selling sportscards. He wrote me back telling me to come look at them.
When I got there he stated he had another guy coming to look and what he did was take my offer and kind of Silent bid vs the other guys.

I went thru the collection and picked what I wanted. Basically around 45, 1969 Baseball in really good shape, 50, football, mostly 71,72, 73. 3 1970 Basketball. Some cards were Spurrier Rookie in not real good shape, Old Lou Groza which was pretty beat up, a pretty badly beaten up 1968 Unitas, & a Bob Boozer. For the most part, commons. Also for sale, was about 400-500 junk cards (at least to me they were junk) from the mid 90's to 2012. All regular issue, non inserts. I offered him $75. after I left, I actually felt like I hoped I didnt win cause $75 was WAY over paying for the lot. I got a call later in teh night from him saying the other guy gave him $150!!!! WHAT GOES THRU THESE PEOPLE'S HEAD??
Anyways, to answer the thread question, after talking to this guy and being really nice to him, he buys estates. And he states that he does not deal in sports cards and if he gets another one of old cards, he will call me.
So I am hoping I can get some good stuff thru contacts with an estate buyer.

Anytime I go to parties and company-sponsored events, anything with a name tag required, I wear a lanyard around my neck from one of the Nationals I attended. You know, the ones that have a sportscard laminated on it. Always generates conversation and I never fail to inquire of anyone I talk to, if they ever collected cards (or their parents or grandparents). I don't often uncover massive quantities of vintage stuff, but what a great way to meet people!

This also works while standing in line at the DMV, or waiting in the doctor's offices, etc.

I do not wear it at sporting events since I'm only there to watch the game and not be bothered with stupid, arrogant people.

If you work for a large company, you may want to consider hanging a flyer in the break room, coffee bar or cafeteria.

I work for a large engineering company here in Houston. We have about 3500 employees (that's a conservative guess), but we're housed in 9 different buildings so it makes it sorta difficult.

The flyers will help you meet other collectors even if you don't uncover any finds.

One last thing. A lot of companies will let you post ads on the company intranet if you don't want to do the flyer thing.

I think it is tougher to do these days. I go to the Philly show
but by the time I get on the first day as soon as it opens it
is already too late as dealers have picked over much of
the worthwhile raw.

I would think you need some luck. Checking out local ads
or shows might lead to something. But it is not easy.
