Thought some might be interested in my latest find. I have never actively looked for cards but have had a few minor finds that have come to me over the years. Usually Red Man cards because of my website, and a nice find a few years ago of over two hundred 1911 S74 Silks with backs. The silks graded SGC 30-50 which actually is real good for that issue, and netted me around $30,000. I have never had the monster Red Man find as the cards have typically graded SGC 84 or less. I once had a nice 1933 Goudey find but the cards were rough PSA 4 or worse.
My daughter's softball coach from 1991 has been telling me for years that he had some old cards. I would always tell him I would be glad to look at them, but never pushed it because I fully expected the cards to be 1970-80's stuff in poor condition as is usually the case in these situations.
After 20+ years, he finally called and told me he wanted to sell his cards. I said sure, lets get together some time and do it, and he replied how about in 15 minutes. What better way to spend an afternoon than looking at baseball cards, although I still did not expect much.
He walked into my house carrying three large shoeboxes. I still haven't actually counted the cards, but a couple of thousand sounds about right. The cards ranged from 1956 to 1962, and the condition was outstanding. Obviously, these cards had never been played with and had been kept stored away for over 50 years!
Now we all know, there is mint, and there is MINT. I would describe these cards as "minty". Nice corners but some dings on a fair percentage. Original gloss. Centering about what you would expect, all over the place. Nice selection of stars, but few high series and no big dollar variations. Sorry Blackie, I saw some 1958 Herrera cards but no missing A.
I am guessing the cards will grade mostly SGC 80-84, with hopefully a good number of SGC 88. This was confirmed by the fact that the guy's son in law had sent 10 of the cards to BVG. The following I have already listed on eBay: 1956 Jackie Robinson BVG 7, 1956 Clemente BVG 7, 1958 Mantle All Star BVG 6, 1960 Aaron All Star BVG 7, 1960 Berra BVG 8, 1960 Mantle BVG 8, 1960 Mays BVG 7, 1960 Clemente BVG 7.5, 1961 Aaron BVG 6 and 1960 Mantle All Star BVG Authentic.
Six of the cards have already sold. BVG cards sell at a discount but I have been surprised that there seems to be a demand for BVG graded cards. Hate the labels, but the holders are sort of nice. Total sales so far over $1,000 with the Mantle BVG 8 still to go.
My game plan is to grade 50 or so cards at a time, sell them, and grade some more. BVG is not an option, and the thought of dealing with PSA and the wait time ruled them out. So my first sub of 32 cards went to our beloved SGC. The grades should pop in the next few days. If there is an interest, I will let you all know how it goes. I'm not trying to influence the graders, but there is a lot more cards to submit if I don't get killed on the grades LOL.
Right now I am concentrating on the low hanging fruit. At some point, I will need to decide what to do with all the commons. Unfortunately, It doesn't pay to grade commons if they do not grade SGC 88. I would appreciate any advice.
Oh, by the way, the guy called yesterday, and asked if he could come over. He found three more boxes in his closet!

Good to know. I may be interested in any high grade 59's. I prefer to buy raw and sub myself, but if you sub and get any 88's and above back, I'll certainly consider them if they improve my set. Thanks for sharing the find.

Ron you have a wonderful collection and I have went to your site many times looking at all your beautiful cards. I espcially love the reading and commentary on your cards. Its just amazing to see such fine examples of those RedMan cards.

Thanks for the nice comments. I can't recommend ImageEvent enough. It's almost as much fun as playing with the cards themselves. Very reliable and cheap too.
I did not mean for this thread to be an advertisement. But I think you all are right that the commons will probably need to be disposed of raw. Plus, I wanted to make clear that when I wrote it didn't make sense to submit the commons if they grade less than SGC 88, I meant for resale. I have plenty of SGC 80-86 in my collection.
Anyway, I will probably try a few commons to see if I can pull some 96's, and when reality sets in, I will make sure to let each of you know what I have in each of your specialties.
This is the Clemente. Sold for $140, which seems cheap, but what do I know?

I had a chance to look through the three additional boxes, and it was really just more of the same. A few more oddball items like a stack of 1959 Ted Williams, Exhibits, 1957-59 football (not one Unitas or Brown) and some goofy non sport. But basically 1956-62 Topps baseball.
Now for the news. The first test submission of 32 cards popped. Here is a teaser for Blackie.
8 1958 Topps 351 BRAVES' FENCE BUSTERS 82
9 1958 Topps 352 HERB SCORE 86
10 1958 Topps 482 ERNIE BANKS All-Star 84
11 1958 Topps 484 FRANK ROBINSON All-Star 84
Grades were about what I expected, mostly SGC 80-86, but only three SGC 88 and none higher which was a bit disappointing. A few too many SGC 70 and one 1960 Aaron All Star SGC 45. Ughhh, what was I thinking.
I will post a few scans Monday when I get the cards back. I will submit about 50 more next week. This time I got to concentrate!
I did also get a few nice cards crossed over for my own sets. The highlight was a 1952 Red Man Jansen PSA 9 to SGC 96.It's a tough card and represents an upgrade from SGC 86. I did miss on two 1933 Goudeys that I wanted to cross to SGC 88. But a 1933 Goudey Pat Malone crossed to SGC 80, and it is a super tough common to find.

What about the 57-59 Football? What are your plans for them?
John
Yes, I like to know myself, I could use old FOOTBALL cards of the back days when it was football. If your selling them, hit me up too.

Don't worry, I will make everything available to you guys first. I am only going to be submitting cards 50 or so at a time. I can't handle doing more than that. At some point, I will decide that grading more cards makes little economic sense, and I will offer the raw cards to each of you that has expressed an interest.
The cards that grade high enough, I will be putting in my eBay store, but I will make sure you guys see them first. The cards that grade too low for my eBay store, I will add to my Wallapalooza Sale page.
I will continue to post in this thread stories about the find as well as scans and grading results as long as you are all interested. I will post info about sales in the appropriate Buy/Sell/Trade section. But again, everyone that expressed an interest will be shown the cards in their specialties first.
I do not think this will take more than a couple of months. There are approximately 4,000 cards to go thru but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that submitting common cards for selling isn't a very sound business plan unless i'm hitting a good percentage of 96's. So I am guessing at this point that maybe 400 cards end up getting graded, most of the major stars and I'll take a stab at some commons to see how it goes.
Thanks for all the comments!

Something strange about this find. The distribution of the cards seems weird. At first I thought it had been cherry picked. But then I see eight pretty nice 1958 Mantles. I don't know what to think.
When I collected cards as a kid, back in 1960, I remember the Yastrzemski rookie card being so common that we literally threw them down the sewer. I remember because we couldn't pronounce his name.
Now we all know it was a double printed card. This find, which is very heavy in 1960 cards, has one Yaz rookie.
Any interesting theories?

Is it the 58 Mantle or 58 Mantle All Star? I believe the A/S is triple printed.

All #150, the orange one. Only one Mantle All Star.
The most cards are 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1961. The least are 1956, 1959 and 1962. That seems strange too.

Just the first three boxes, and then three more. He thinks that's it. I asked him how could he forget how many boxes he had, and he said he stuck them away 30 years ago when he bought his house, and hadn't looked at them since.
Which I think is a lesson to be learned. We would all probably be better off putting our cards away in a safe, dry, dark place and leaving them alone.

Here are a few from the first sub with SGC. The second sub went out yesterday. I will show all of the cards that are for sale on the Buy/Sell/Trade page, probably by this weekend. I hurt my back. The tint is from my scanner.

Thanks, guys.
The total submission was 33 cards (I am taking it slow because it's a lot of work!) The results were mixed. I haven't really been looking at them that close. I have mostly been submitting the big stars because they justify the time and expense of grading no matter what. But, I will have to do a much better job on the commons.
Pat (mintacular), I did not receive your PM. Try my email. rgold7000@aol.com.
A few more results. All cards have now been listed on eBay or they are in my B/S/T listing. If you see any cards that you like in my eBay store, I will take off 10%, just write me.
