Second, my son was born in 1983. Third, I just happened to have a case of vending boxes. I got a lot of early help from Joe Pankiewicz, who I owe a huge debt of gratitude. Thanks, Joe! Later, I began sending in subs of 50 which I prescreened myself, with a stipulation of SGC 98 minimum grade. The two 100's shown here came back in my most recent sub, in which 32 of 50 cards made the grade. I was pretty happy with that ratio. I am up to 70% completion, with a whopping 55 SGC 100s included. It's getting tougher as I have been through my case of vending. I'll probably make one more pass to see if I've missed any, then I'll start looking for individuals.

Great story! Have been meaning to do something similar (SGC 96+) with 1980 Topps set for years. Do you have all the cards up in the registry?

I bought a couple of big-name 1983 Fleer stars from Joe off of eBay. He contacted me and said he had a lot of cards from that year and would have them graded if I would purchase them. I specified SGC 98 and he fed me a steady diet of graded cards at reasonable prices until his well ran dry. I got most of the stars from him and probably 30% of my current collection.

I do have all the cards listed in the Registry, "Hoppy's 1983 Fleer." I don't have pix yet, though.

jehoppy!

I thought I was the only one goofy enough to do this kind of thing! LOL!

While my craziness was with 1988 Topps Football cards that I opened almost two cases trying to obtain the perfect set. No grading for me though as Im a raw guy.

I think you might have even out did my own insainity! The 83 Fleers look fantastic in the SGC holders.

Its not often you see the kind of dedication and passion for collecting that goes beyond the simple "whats it worth" collector to a deeper more personal reason for collecting.

Please post more scans here soon!

John

That is an impressive set. Do you have scans of your Gem: Boggs, Gwynn, and Sandberg cards to share?

The 1983 Fleer is a nice looking set. Don't know why anyone would bad mouth it.

More power to ya, go for it.

I haven't had any trouble getting pictures posted thru Photobucket, but what do I need to do to get them larger? Any suggestions? Thanks!
