Today, just might have been one of the top 10 days in my entire life, because of the fun I had with my 10 year old son (I have a 20 year old son and 3 year old daughter too), and I have this hobby of card collecting to thank. So I thought I would share it with my collecting buddies.
Today, there were 2 card shows in Kansas City, one on the Missouri side and one on the Kansas side. I live 45 minutes west of the KC.
So I have been working my 10 year old into collecting, after his "PokeMan" craze. First off, the 45 minute drive, we turned the radio off and just talked. Talked about KU basketball, card collecting, who I thought was the best QB of all time, and other worldly topics.
We get to the first show (Missouri) and it was a bust. However, I think I accidentally ticked a dealer off. I saw he had a T-206 Jim Delehanty graded in Poor, and knew they went for around $30-$50 (You can "buy it now" on Ebay for $30), so I was expecting him to say maybe $60. I asked how much he was asking for it, he quickly relied "$100", It happened to quick and I didnt have time to think, and I just "WOOOA" really loud and turned around and walked off.
So we went to the Kansas show. I found the 1970 Bubba Smith right off the bat, he had $20 on it and I told him I could buy it on Ebay right now for $5. He replied "then buy it from me for $5". Right off I knew we were in business. Couple tables later, I found a STACK OF MY 1972 HIGH #'!!
I bought 11 of them, all in EX shape for $75.
So then I found a box full of 1958 & 1962 Topps, and a bunch of old Fleer & Philadelphia. About 250 cards, for $40.
So my wad was spent. SO I told my son he could shop. He then found 35 of his favorites for $7. Bunch of the newer guys. But when we left, he told me I was the best Dad in the World for letting him buy them!!
So we then stopped in at "Cheeseburger In Paradise" and had lunch together.
This hobby has brought me and my son together and I thank it for that.
Sorry to post this story on here, but you all are my collecting brothers!

Very nice KNole - we may have to catch a Royals game this year on T-Shirt Tuesday or a buck night.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

I always try to make it to Kauffman when they play the Rays. Rays fan since day one, as Tampa is my favorite home away from home. We vacation in a bungalow every year in October.

Anyways, YES, we HAVE to try to get together for a Royals game!!!!!

My son collects Topps complete sets. Started in 2011 and asks for FB or BB for Christmas or his B-Day.
But then also loves to collect Football, Topps Platinum of any year. Then also likes to collect players he likes or thinks are good. He likes Calvin Johnson, Revis, any Chiefs, and any Georgia Bulldog or Miami Hurricane.
Thats what he bought all of today.

What an awsome story!

This is what it is all about! This is what is lacking in the hobby nodays, the interaction with the kids and how it can bring not only a father and son closer together, but an uncle, nephew, granfather/grandson or any older generation with the younger crowd.

My son is 8 years old and still in the "pokemon" stage you spoke of, and that is fine as well, its stil card collecting and gives us that common bond. If he someday involoves himself with sports cards that's fine, but for now we just enjoy the cards, no matter the subject.

The traditional card collecting experience has slowly been losing the younger generations to video games and other high tec toys, so its nice to hear that their are still a few who will know the joy of collecting.

Some Mystery cards will be one the way for your Son.

John

Not Baseball related but I got my 11 year old collecting vintage cards. He is into anything Batman so last year at a convention I showed him the cards from the original show.He instantly took a liking to them and bought quite a few that weekend. Now ever show we go to he has something to search for as well.He has even talked about having some of the nicer ones he has graded.Maybe it will one day branch off to sports cards but I'm happy he is at least in the hobby.Jason W

Let's make it a foursome, I haven't been to a Royals game since the early 70's.

AWESOME feed back guys!!

And Red, yep, I am a HUGE advocate of the "NFL Play 60" program.

I think that also has a lot to do with his interest in cards too (playing sports).

The "NFL Play 60" program teaches kids to go outside and play at least 60 minutes a day.

In Kansas right now, it's cold, but he still puts on his KU Jayhawks jacket and goes outside and plays on the neighbors B-Ball goal, about 3-4 times a night for about 20-30 minutes a night.

Ahhh Red, you dont have to do that (Surprise mail). That is VERY kind of you. Almost brought tears to this 41 year old fat guy's eyes :-)

This board is AMAZING!! you guys are the BEST!! You are like me, and collect for the love of the sports and the hobby. YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Yes, we need to set up a date, where we can meet at "The K". I am going to have to take off work to see my Rays this year as they only play a week day series this year in KC :-(
So I dont care who we see, ya'll pick, and me and my 10 year old will be there!
