I think only submissions from God are eligible to receive 98s and 100s

It does happen. But then often I've been accused of walking on water. Or at least thinking I could. End result wasn't too pleasant, best I remember.

Maybe it all has something to do with thinking "wet." But I dunno.

Those Gaylords are freakin AWESOME!
My favorite is the 1980 Topps. The 1980 Topps set was always one of my favortie card designs with the upper and lower ribbon and the facsimile autograph. Lots of action shots in the set as well.

Years ago I dumped all of my baseball sets, I kind wish I still had my 1980 Topps set.

The "Gem Mint" grade is one of the greatest marketing ploys ever created. It was simply made up by TPGer's to create a "Lottery" type effect that preys on the human greed factor to entice more submissions of cards(even the same card over and over) It really is a brilliant marketing scam they have created.

They can split hairs all they want but pretty much ALL "10's" are really only Mint 9's on any given day and there are a multitude of 9's that are as nice as any 10's.

Example: Both These Michael Jordan are absolute razor sharp flawless cards. I subbed them both and the All-Star card may be the nicer of the two.
Its really quite a rackett they have going.

John,

First, thanks for the compliment.

Secondly, you're right on the mark with your analysis. This small group was part of a non-scientific test I did, which really adds credence to your point. Three of these, well actually four, were 9's before they were 10's, including the 1980 card. They were all initially submitted raw, except for the Yaz/Perry card. The four all initially came back 9. So, I cracked them out and re-subbed them.

Now the '84 Fleer in the upper right corner, some how I ended up with about a half-dozen of those cards raw all pretty nice. I thought I had submitted the nicest one of the bunch. It came back a 9 with the other three. So, I cracked it out and re-subbed it with another pretty much identical '84 Fleer in another grouping. I separated the cards in the sub and on the invoice. When the invoice was entered they were all in the same order. When they popped they were still in same order. Along with the other three the original '84 came back a 10, the second '84 pretty much identical, came back a 9. I still wasn't satisfied so I cracked the '84 9 out and put it in with another sub. On the second attempt it came back a 10. So, then I really wanted to try something bold. A few months later I cracked the initial '84 out, now a 10, and stuck it in with another sub. Now keep this all in perspective, the card has gone from raw, to 9, to 10 in two subs. Well, you can imagine my laughter when the card popped.....a "9". So, now this one card has gone full circle, raw, 9, 10, 9. Now it has a good home in Kansas with a very nice 10 year old collector and Royals fan, who received it as a gift.

This is just one small example of the point you're making. These cards aren't worth a whole lot in the overall scheme of things, but one can only imagine the amount of money spent daily by folks doing basically the same thing except with more expensive cards. Not only the cost of subbing and re-subbing multiple times but how this manipulates card pricing. Not to mention, it leaves the "what's it worth" crowd in a conundrum, what's it REALLY worth? The TPG'ers are just trying to make a profit and stay in business. Well, o' Joe and his racketeers across the street take "funny stuff" to a whole different level, but then who don't know that. There is truly enough blame to go around in other areas of the hobby.

It sure has gotten a long way from here, huh?

Wouldn't you just love to be in the middle of this transaction.
