Ok we see these posts alot and I try not to really bring it up much but couldn't on this card. This Billy Pierce SGC 88 is a tougher card to pick up for the avid 1958 Collector like myself but for $565 bucks its way too high..and I mean way too much. But for an SGC 88 the corners are quite weak. They don't look that great at all to be quite frank. I can possibly see this as an SGC 84 at best. Just my opinion. What do you all think.

I agree. I think an 84 is generous. I would go 82 at best.

Old, dense-headed hammers are cool. Best nail pounders.

Agreed, terrible 88...borderline 84, at best. Here's a similar one of mine that got no love in NJ.

Just saw the Pierce, so I'm late to the party. But the lower right of the case appears to be cracked to me. Wonder if it was tampered with? You have some possible evidence of the fingerprint on the lower left. \:\)

If not tampered with, I really would not put it as low as an 82 or 84. It's a 86 by today's standards and I could see an 88 if it was graded 2-3 years ago.

You know I never really thought about it much but you may have a good point Mike. I have noticed alot of the older SGC graded 88's I have aren't near as nice as the ones graded recently. Guess the standards have tightened up a bit or somthing. The Pierce may or may not be tampered with but it is quite possible. I can't see the seller getting his godawful price that he's asking for it. Its a tougher 58 no doubt but I can get alot more good stuff for $565 dollars than an overgraded yellow team SGC 88.

No way in hell its an 86. There seems to be a stain in border , lower left.

That "stain" is more likely a spot of paper toning, or natural aging of the cardboard after 55 years. Certainly not enough to hammer it to an 82. The biggest problem is the upper right corner and 2-3 years ago that card was an 88 more times than not. The centering is fine and the surface appears spotless in that oversized scan. Much more goes into the technical grade than a bad corner or a toning spot on the border.

The Hodges by comparison, I'd bet money was graded within the past year. It is also an 88 in my book. I'd be proud to own that card. It books at $60 in NM and I doubt if the owner would sell it for double that.

Apparently it's a tough, low pop variation. The seller is probably looking to score a quick buck from a desperate buyer who needs that last variation to complete his set. I looked up the VCP and nothing comes close to what the seller is asking, unless you consider more than double any sale in history to be close. 707 probably sells in that range. I did find where he had a 7 for sale for $255.
