I have been a longtime submitter to PSA but have decided to give SGC some (if not all) of my card grading business.

Since I have never submitted to SGC I was wondering specifically about the following 2 scenarios:

1. How will they handle an off center card when it comes to grading. PSA gives it the curse of death, the dreaded OC or MC.

2. If a vintage card is pristine in every way (sharp corners, great centering, etc) but it had the misfortune of being taped to someone's old photo album. What is the maximum it could grade? There is no paper loss on the card, the tape was carefully removed, but you can still see the residue it left behind.(and some slight discoloration where the card was never exposed to light)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off welcome to the boards! We have alot of submission experts here. I have only submitted 1958 topps a a few other years but alot of my higher end oc cards still pull out 84-86's. As far as tape im not real sure. Grading standards are found on the sgcwebsite if you want more specifics. Cant type well on my iphone here but im sure someone will chime in to give ya more help soon.

Again welcome to the boards and SGC!

Welcome to the boards. First off you will find submitting to SGC is a lot easier than PSA, the biggest thing is you can combined any service level or slab size on any invoice. That can also save you a nice bit on shipping.

On OC and MC cards it really depends on how badly they are off but the grades can range all the way up to 88/8. For instance I once cracked a PSA 9 (OC) and submitted to SGC and it got an 88/8 so was very happy with that.

On the glue residue hard to say but I dont think either company will grade it higher than a 30/2 if there is actual residue on it. I do know some can be cleaned off them and you are left with only a discolored spot, I have seem those grade up to an 80/6.

Good luck!

Welcome aboard. You will find SGC is much more lenient on off centered cards.

Don't believe it. SGC used to be more lenient on o/c cards. Try submitting a borderline PSA card that doesn't have the qualifier; i.e., a straight 8 or 7 that you feel was lucky to avoid the qualifier. Betcha you'll get a half to full grade lower with SGC. SGC tightened up the centering some 2-3 years ago and what used to sneak by, now does not. I should know. I've been a long time, consistent submitter since 2001.

I think SGC is fair with off centered cards.

I agree fair and I like where they are right now. I do agree with bbo a few years back they were very easy on OC but no more.
