Got back last night from a 4-day trip to the National. Pretty beat up from it all and still groggy, but here's a short update.

If not for the Topps/Upper Deck/other corporate booths, this was one of the deadest National's I've ever been too. More traffic at the tables on Wed/Thur than Fri/Sat.

However, plenty of cards still out there. I spent my wad mostly on 1952 & 1959 commons (what else?), the latter of which was subbed to SGC on Saturday morning using the August 15% OFF special. Now I wait. I did have Earl write on the invoice "Need 88/92 for Set Registry upgrades, please have mercy."

Seriously, he wrote that.

Almost pulled the trigger on a 1959 Mantle in SGC 88, but upon close inspection, it had a serious print flaw just inside the right border. Plus it wasn't centered as well as my 86. And he wanted $2,200 for it ($2k cash). Pffft! My 86 cost me less than half that. Way less.

I saw the first/only PSA 10 Nolan Ryan Rookie ever graded. Hugely disappointed. PSA wasted a 10 on a card that didn't deserve it. Natex had a MINT 9 that was clearly a better card. The dealer displaying the Ryan (who will remain unnamed), agreed with me. It wasn't for sale, just displayed. He wouldn't tell me who owned it except that it was a "professional athlete" not named Dmitri.

Earl showed me the new SGC slab. You guys are gonna like it. Slightly rounded corners, 40% to 50% thinner and lighter, completely stackable with the current slabs, and a promise for a price special to reholder if one is so inclined. Will fit 80 to a box vs. 42-44 I have now in the SGC custom boxes. Good move, SGC. Thank you.

PSA bought lunch on Friday. (I snuck in, incognito.) They are changing their holder, which looks like a cheap version of the Beckett slab. No examples, without fighting the enormous crowds at the PSA booth to get a first hand look. They are also launching an online "game" to get people "interested in collecting" who wouldn't otherwise be. Kind of fun-looking, but not sure what it does for the long-time collector.

Maybe more later.

No pic. Highly top secret. No cameras allowed. But holding it in hand, there is a noticeable difference.

Flip changing, too, both for aesthetics and security, IIRC. I did not see the new flip, only passing on Earl's description from memory.

I bought from a handful of dealers (6-8, maybe). Most of which I've never met before and most of which are the "weekend warrior" types who have other jobs. I find these are the best chances to unearth some mint-y commons that don't get gobbled up on Tuesday set up day by other sharks, er, ahh, dealers.

About 4/5 of the 1959 commons I submitted were from a couple guys from Wisky who were set up in the back near one of the food courts. Some of those were absolute cherry. I had to go back to the hotel twice to change my skivvies. Another five cards came from Floyd Soeder (fscards1 on eBay). He had some very entertaining old phat guys working for him. Had a blast back there playing amateur Who Can Top That.

Picked up a decent 1959 #80 Minoso for $5 from a guy named Don Hontz and a #88-Score for $8 from somewhere I can't recall, although I didn't need either of them for my set. I threw those on a buddy's invoice with the other guys to help him reach the 50-card minimum for their $5 show submission special.

Picked up about a dozen 1952 highs from different places all around the room. A few from Chappell Cards. I can't remember his name, but he's an honest dealer. He talked me out of a 1952 Jackie Robinson that he knew had a couple of very discreet flaws and frankly was priced too high ($595) for the Poor-1 it would have graded. The front looked like a 60/5 at first and second glance.

Natex had a "bargain" box of PSA 8 cards from the 1960's for 30% off SMR. I scrounged through those long enough to find four that probably should be 8.5 or 9.

Stopped by some of the big eBay "young guns" nearer the front (Scottsdale Cards, TriplesSs, Tony eTrade). A couple very limited purchases there, more chit-chat than dealing at those tables.

Saw the without-a-doubt best 1952 PSA 4 Mathews on the planet. Dead centered front and back (how many times has that ever been said about any '52 Mathews?), great color, no creases, just some honest corner wear. He was asking nearly 50% above book and I'll bet it's gone by the end of the show.

Cool thanks for the update Mike. I got way to many cards to try to reholder on my 58 set so I will just keep em in the Original holder but am very anxious to see one first hand.

I have puchased several nice 1958's from FLoyd and his prices are not bad at all. Good guy

Thanks again for the updates man

I just got back from the National at 7.20 P.M. Central.I didn't do a lot of trading but I did pick up some high grade 58s as upgrades & about 20 PSA cards for my sets.I ended up selling $1340.00 more than I bought just getting rid of doubles.I did meet BBO,& u guys might not believe this, but he seems like a really nice guy.lol.I couldnt get together with SGC on my grading price but I am hard to deal with at times. All in all it was ok but I think I liked the Chicago National 2 yrs ago better.Floyd Soeder bought a lot of cards from me in 2011 but I sold over 8 grand before I left & he thought the guy had cherry picked what I had.He didn't but I think Floyd thought that. When I get home,i always say im not going back but I always do.

If you damage my reputation and street cred any further by insisting what a nice guy I am, I'll be tempted to leave my set to you in my will.

Now, spill the beans and tell them who you thought I was when Earl introduced us.

That's right. For about one minute, I was Earl's boss. Then the world returned to normal and the look on golden-Boyd's face was priceless. All the air left his balloon.
