Wuz readin' 'bout the scarcity of 1971 Topps cellos on the other board and it reminded me of a past experience. Some 15-16 years, me and another buddy were graduating up from weekend warrior, hotel/mall shows and decided to set up at one of the big Houston AstroArena shows (yes, there used to be two: TriStar and Sports Collectibles). We barely had enough cards to set up and compete.

Anyway, we heard a rumor that a guy was going table to table trying to sell a bunch of unopened 1971 cello packs. It was the talk of the show. Not too long after that, some wiry, small guy in his late 20's, early 30's brings a grocery bag up to our table and asks if we buy cards?

We look inside and it's the 71 cellos. Box after loose box of Gem Mint cellos. Each had a cellophane wrapper of 25 cards, inside the black box that Topps put them in back then.

Ooops. Sorry, there's the doorbell. Gotta go. Be back soon.

Nope. They were loose out of the box. As we emptied the bag, at the bottom, THEN, there was a box like the one you pictured, but without the cellophane. He must've had 40-50 of the loose ones, then the unopened box.

We asked how much he wanted. He quoted some insane price like $3,000, which came to about $50 per pack.

We said....oh, there's the phone. Excuse me, I need to take this call.

Anyway, we said, we don't have that kind of money. Plus we were afraid they may have been stolen. Why else would all the dealers ahead of us at the show have passed on them?

I'll take them! I probably would have passed on them to and bought Wes Chamberlain cards instead :(.

Aconte, I almost bought them. I remember thinking I would not open them because it was not a year I collected as a kid. If I still had them now, I could probably have gotten 5x to 10x my money on them or more. I distinctly remember Rose showing on one and Carew on another. So I guess the loose ones were 2nd and 3rd series. I have no idea what series the box was.

I had a fear that they had been lifted and I'd have to give them up and then try to find the scoundrel to get my money back. I had no reason to believe they were "hot," but it was just a caution at the time.
