My 2013 National sub of 1959 Topps Baseball has been graded. The results have not posted yet, but by monitoring the change in the population report, here are the preliminary findings. Some may change, based on past experience, but here's what I have so far.

Cards subbed - 30.
EXMT 80 - 2 cards.
NRMT 84 - 5
NRMT+86 - 7
NMMT 88 - 13 (incl. #62-Tony Taylor, easily the 2nd best card in the group and deserved better.)
NMMT+92 - 2 (#114-Earl Battey, #402-Hector Lopez-best card in the bunch, by far! s/b a 96 or 98.)
MINT 96 - 1 (#173-Monbouquette rookie)

At least 13 of the 30 will upgrade my set as they are "numerical" upgrades. Another 10 cards may be upgrades since they are numerical grade equivalents to what I currently have. I'll compare them side by side upon delivery.

As I moved down the invoice list from card 1 to card 30, the first 8 cards didn't start off too well. The grader was overly critical on a few of those, based on my memory of the raw card(s). But then at card #9, the grades took a decidely positive turn. Only two of the remaining 22 cards after #8 on the invoice graded less than 86.

More details to follow.

22 of the 30 cards I got from the same dealer, a couple of weekend warriors from Wisconsin set up near the back by the concession stand. A bunch of them were 1st series low numbers. Of the 22 cards I got from those guys, 13 graded 88 or better, including both of the 92's and the sole 96.

Two of the 88's came from Floyd Souder (fscards1 on eBay?). A #111-Redlegs Team card graded 86 which upgrades my set. I think I paid $7 for it. That was my first purchase on Wednesday right after the plane touched down. So, thanks, Floyd.

Generally, yes. Any time I get over half of the invoice to grade 88 or higher, it's time to take a victory lap. But it's been nearly a month and I want to see the cards again. I found some really nice cards in Chicago and a few of them should have graded higher. As I went down the list looking up populations to determine what grade each card received, it was as if the grader went to lunch after the eighth card on the invoice and came back with a proper attitude toward #9-30.

Grades posted. No changes that I can tell. Scans to follow next week. Notice the sharp turn up after line #8. Grader must've had a nice lunch. Numeric upgrades to my set in RED. Some of the others are "ties" and may be upgrades. A few will be for sale or trade.

Looks like you had a pretty good eye as only two come back as 80. For me the lines get blurry in the 84,86,88 range as it probably does for the guy doing the grading also. Two 92s and a 96 (awesome)

Shipment arrived. The Registry is down again, so I can't add my upgrades. I guess I'll just show-and-tell with scans here and wait for the fix next week. You know, it would be helpful to everyone involved to have a consistently-working Set Registry to display cards. There are way too many instances of the Registry being down.

Had to show a $7 pickup first. The Redlegs card is the toughest Team card in the set. This one's centering is unmatched, though it does have some obligatory black print marks up around the name. The scan hardly does it justice. I was lucky to get to it when the doors opened. I'm sure it would have been long gone by Wednesday's close.

Next up is the A-group of the highest grades from the sub. I included the Frank Thomas because I had forgotten how good he looked. Should have been a 92.
 photo 1959_A.jpg

Next up are Coot & Zack with a couple of friends. Amaro in 88 is actually inferior to the 86 he may replace in my set. Just my opinion.

Next up is this group which technically make the 88 grade, but are not as eye-popping as some of the others. Legitimate upgrades, all, so here they are.

Another group of 88 eye candy. The Taylor and Goodman have absolutely flawless surfaces and razor sharp corners. Both would have been 92's if I had found and subbed them five years ago.
 photo 1959_D.jpg

A few lesser grade 86's, most of which have enough flaws to keep them out of 88 holders. But I gotta say, we're straining at gnats to swallow a camel here. Only the Aguirre upgraded the 86 already in my set, although the fish-eyes are starating to bother me.
 photo 1959_E.jpg

The first two in this group I just don't understand. Giel is way better than both of the 84's I already own. Gene Green is equal to any 88 in this post. Since I already have one in 88, I'll find a way to submit this one over across the street and then sell him to recoup my grading fees.

Now for the "rejects." I am of the belief that you have to have a few clunkers on every invoice to make the good stuff stand out. Obviously, these suck and need to be sent to the round file. \:\)

Exactly half of the 30-card invoice resulted in upgrades to my set. I am amassing quite a stack of NM+ 86 cards if anyone is interested in starting a "better than near mint" set.
