Good place to go, however, if you want to be patted on the back for getting a few Kellogg psa 9s (which accounts for most of the Kellogg grades).

There is expertise about individual sets into the 1960s but aside from Marc Schonoen(sp?) who seldom posts anymore because he is in school, I haven't seen anyone with broad expertise in vintage sets.

Davalillo -- thank you for the nice words. In fact -- the breadth of my knowledge is worthy of a big thanks to many like yourself.

As for your other comment -- there often is too much quantity on the other boards. It is a tough balance -- the CU boards often seem to have the most "new" collectors come visit the boards, but, in general, it is too cumbersome and time-consuming for any one individual to spend adequate time to bring them up to speed.

OK KLL, I'll bite.

Since you want to help out and make the board more active, what sets are you collecting? (I seem to remember that you were looking for high grade commons from the 50's and early 60's...but which sets are you really focusing on?) How are you doing on the sets? Have you registered any of them? What have been your greatest challenges? Which card is really driving you crazy?

Let's "talk" -- no use "dying" just yet!

Okay...here's what i got and here's what i'm working on;

hockey; I collect rookie cards from the 60's and 70's. some 80's (gretzky, lemieux, bourque, and messier rookies). Also, bruins commons and stars in high grade.

completed 1954 topps hockey -- average grade vg-vg-ex. about 20% of the set is graded. i am currently working on another low grade set.

completed 71-72 opc hockey...I have a ken dryden gai 8.5 rookie that's my star of this set. only about 10% of this set is graded and is in the ex-mint to near-mint range.

completed: (just recently)...1933 v357 ice kings...low, low grade. average card grade is 1-2 range with a couple of 3s and 4s. working on another set...this is going to take a few years and is not my highest priority. Only 7 cards graded thus far. I love these cards (they are my favorite set by far).

new project: going to try to build a c56 1910 hockey set..i have only 2 of the 36 card set. I am definitely going low grade on this.

semi-new project: finish my 51 parkhurst hockey set: i have the howe, richard rookies in vg condition. i have 22 of the 105 card set thus far. 11 gai graded.

baseball:

roberto clemente, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 68, 69, 72, 73. the rookie is gai 5.5 and the 58 is a gai 7.5. i want to get every single issue up to his death in 73. (no modern inserts).

basketball. i have virtually every key basketball rookie in existence (except Russell and Mikan). i have an gai 8.5 "dr j" rookie from 1972.

football:

I collect Raymond Berry and have several of his cards in the gai 6.0 to gai 7.5 range. but that's really it as far as football is concerned.

Issues: No time to go to shows, not much time to do lengthly e-bay searches as well, and balancing my hobby spending money between buying cards and sending them off for grading.

Hi grilloj39 --

I noticed you are from San Antonio. Are there any decent card shows in your town? There is zip, zilch, zero, nada here in Austin. Of course, the most often seen bumper stickers on cars in this town read, "Keep Austin Weird" ... so maybe it stands to reason.

Best shows I can find within easy driving distance are in Houston. Dallas is too far to drive to/from in a single day. So, what's the scoop on SA shows?

From a hobby perspective, I'm tired of being stuck in Austin with the weirdos.

1---the Pat Booker Convention Center (off I-35 and near Randolph AFB) has them from time to time. They are pretty good, there are some pretty fine football collections (is it Texas after all) there, not too much hockey. Sometimes I just go to look around and buy supplies. You can get great deals on vintage football and vintage football commons.

To answer your question, I am mainly focusing on 1959 topps at this time. I have a group of close to 75 cards graded 88 or 92- a couple of 96's. I recently crossed over about 150 SGC 88/92/96's from 1960-1962 into PSA holders. I will not cross my 1959's- because they look to nice in the SGC holders. But my 1959's are my main focus, my favorite year. I have given up on the other years and will be consigning the lot to a dealer.

I did well with my cross overs of SGC 88 & 92's. Very few came back lower in grade. Actually, I had 5 of 30+ sgc 92 cross into PSA 9 holders! I did not do as well with my SGC 96's. Of the 20+ that I had 13 failed to cross to PSA 9. I was told it was due to centering issues, which I more less agree with, but they are MINT nice cards regardless. Overall I was pleased with the results.

I gave up on these other years because cards from this period are seldom offered at the shows that I attend. I think I mentioned in a past post that one of my main sources over the past 3 years for SGC graded cards was Bob Kaiser (VA). I always bought from him at the Ft. Washington show. He no longer submits to SGC. And seldom are there any 92's or 96's offered for sale in my price range on EBAY and honestly, I am a bit hesitant to purchase any card without holding the card in my hand.

At the recent Ft. Washington show there was not a single 1959-1962 Topps baseball SGC 88 or 92/96 in the room.

KLL --

I have a passing interest in 1962 Topps baseball graded SGC 96 or better. Out of curiosity, were any of the 96s that you attempted to cross to PSA from the 1962 set?

If so, would mind posting a list of those cards?

Actually, I used to own a lot of SGC 96s in the 1961, 1960 and 1959 Topps sets. Would you mind posting the list of all 96s you crossed to PSA regardless of year/set?

TIA ...
