I have heard from a very reliable source that PSA will be raising prices in January 2004. Apparently it is their position, or the opinion of some in positions of authority, that the public has no choice but to use them due to their domination in grading from their Set Registry. In other words, like the joke goes...Why does a dog lick his b---s? Because he can.

I have also heard that PSA has attempted to apply pressure to the promoter of the Fort Washington Show to make GAI move from their location, which is right next to PSA for all future shows. The reason given is that PSA's customers were uncomfortable coming to the PSA booth while GAI was so close. If GAI was not moved to another location, executives of PSA told the promoter that they would not come back to the show again.

It is my understanding that GAI is not willing to be pushed around and that the promoter is going to support GAI’s decision and is even going to let GAI take PSA's spot if PSA follows through on their threat.

I will let you all draw your own conclusions on these issues.

Interesting stuff. For a long time, PSA has unprofitable for CU, and that simply can't continue. It is unsustainable status quo. From the half point trial ballon to a new holder to ticket grading to membership for direct submission, the CU suits have searcing for a way to leverage the PSA brand to make it profitable. It is a profound senior management failure that a brand as strong as PSA with its market position has proven to be unprofitable. It will be interesting to see how the combination of fee increases (if it turns out to be true) and membership dues affect their long term position. I would not be surprised to see a 1Q profit based on the membership dues coming due, but long term is another question. Another issue will be to see if the other grading Cos. follow suit. If they do, then any negative impact of the fee increase obviously will dissipate.

botn,

I think it is a smart move to raise prices. I would do the same. My guess
is as prices increase by Psa others will follow suit. If you look at the
set registry Psa continues to add many collections. Psa can not continue
to lose money. They are not in it for charity and to make friends. It is
a business and they got to do what it takes to make a profit.

As far as the Ft. Washington thing, this could be a mistake for Psa.
My guess is they will come to their senses and let things stay as they
are. Otherwise they will lose in the end. The Ft. Wash show does
not need Psa as much as Psa needs the Ft. Wash show. The show
is one of the best and will survive without Psa. They have been around
a lot longer.

i agree...it is childish for psa to raise such as fuss as to who they are located next to during a show. if they do indeed raise prices, it will just make me feel that much better about switching over to gai. in all honesty, the only reason i can see to stay with psa is to complete a psa-only set. i really think the quality of grading/graders has suffered over the past year. i think in the long term , the value of a psa/sgc/gai card is going to be relatively the same as collectors begin to realize (i think they are in the process of starting to realize), the great service and accuracy sgc and gai provide.

As stated, PSA will be raising prices on their submissions effective January 1, 2004.

Have a look for yourself...

It's always good to have a source. I wonder if it will be enough to let PSA exist eventually as a stand alone company?

I also wonder if SGC will follow suit? I certainly hope not.

Thanks for the scoop.
