Blambro has some incredible sets -- his '68 set is incredible...part of it registered here and part on the PSA registry....and not a card below 9/96. I have never seen him post here...or across the street. I just checled the user list and there is a blambro registered, but he/she has 0 posts.

It's not a SGC 96, but pretty darn close to as good as you'll find of this card. It has sub-grades of 9 centering, 9.5 corners, 9.5 edges and 7.5 surface. I wish someone would explain to me what/why Beckett is giving such harsh surface grades. There is not one print mark on either side or any noticable scratches or indentations. I guess had it received a 9 for surface, I'd never be able to have afforded it.

Estang,
that card has all the characteristics of a sheet-cut card which Beckett grades but PSA and SGC don't. Recently dealers have been buying uncut sheets of cards, especially from the topps vault auctions on ebay and cutting them up. PSA usually catches them and SGC doesn't grade them either I believe. Beckett of course will grade about anything, so they do. Classic characteristics of a recently sheet cut card are nice edges, corners and centering and a bad surface. This carew fits the bill perfectly.

If you don't mind recently cut cards vs those cut the year they were manufactured, then bid away. But most collectors seem to see these as illegitimate (sp?).

Estang,

I believe dbj77 is correct with his comments. I've heard time and time
again that cards graded that high in all three categories and low with
the surface grade have been known to be sheet cut. Your card looks
great but I bet it was cut from a sheet. Some would argue so what.
I'd prefer not to buy a card with these characteristics. 'Buttermarc'
is much more familiar with this and might be able to share his
expertise. I believe he's commented about this on the Psa boards.

Aconte...although the sub-grades should be warning signs of a sheet-cut card, it is not necessarily the case each and every time. A microscope and the ability to view the card in person is probably the only way to get a true indication. What would be of a great help is policy. As long as BVG is going to grade cut-sheet cards, I will not buy any BVG card that I think may be in this category.

If you also consider that the 75s were condition-sensitive as far as centering is concerned and this card seems to be perfectly centered...yes it is most-likely a sheet-cut card.

It is interesting to hear that there's a chance my card could be cut from a sheet, based upon some reputation that BGS and PSA allow this. I have to say that it doesn't bother me as I know I won't be selling it and it has fantastic eye appeal.

I'm fairly certain that I purchased the card from ebay seller 'thekardking', who sells many top grade Beckett graded cards.

I would like to better understand how a microscope or loupe would be able to verify that it was cut from a sheet. I'd also like to know how people are doing this. Is it with an industry machine or a simple paper cutter that you would often see in an office building or school. I'd also like to know what exactly SGC would do if it was sent to them. Would they simply not grade it and what excuse would they give? Would it say it was trimmed?

I recall seeing a BVG 1976 Topps Carew on ebay in 9.5 condition. It was 9.5 in all aspects and it went for over $300. I believe I put in a $275 bid and in hindsight I'm glad I didn't win, because: a) that's more money than I'd want to pay for the card b) the gold label would clash against all my 8.5 and 9.0 BVG labels.

Anyway, Vikings are 6-0!!!

erik,
the best signs of a sheet cut card is that the borders will not have little tiny fibers almost looks like hair on the borders. you usually can see this under 10x magnification. i also love the phantom surface grade which i usually stay away from!
i have 79 o pee chee gerry cheevers that is sheet cut bgs 9 and i love it. if you love it then thats all that matters.

i am trying to get some serenity so i am looking at that 75 carew card and man i tell i love that card. this would be the year before i started collecting and can remember going to kmart and getting the left overs. i do enjoy the set but probably would never commit to collecting it. a few other cards that float my boat is the brook robinson, the aaron HL and the fisk with the hotel in the back ground. got to love them spring training photos. i know there are a ton of tough commons probably too many to list and my hobby dollars are going to be real thin till christmas is over there is one card i would like to get in an sgc 96 before christmas is a 76 brooks robinson? i want one that doesn't have the diamond cut that i see so often on this card sort of like the schmidt card if you ever find a schmidt with four true borders and is not diamond cut buy it!
