As it turned out, I just added an SGC 84 1952 Berra to my Red Man collection. The 1952's are really tough, even after collecting Red Mans exclusively for 20+ years. And everyone knows how tough SGC grades!! That's why I use them exclusively. I would just as soon have a set that is graded rock solid, than one that is really "loosey goosey" (PSA).
I now have my 1952 set to an average of 85.4. I believe the very best possible 1952 Red Man set average currently is 88.8. If I can replace four 80's, two 70's and one 60 with all 84's, I'd be a very happy camper !!! Those are my "holes". Therefore, I'm always looking for people to trade SGC graded Red Mans.

Thanks Arch. Hope SGC builds a really nice registry that will be very interactive and shows off the real value of the SGC holder and their grading standards. I am confident that a vast majority of the top vintage sets in the hobby will eventually end up in SGC holders.

I noticed the news flash about the registry on SGC's home page. They have rolled out a 'set building' special and listed some features of the registry. What do you all think? I'm looking forward to it.

I hate advertising my abundant ignorance like this, but what's the deal with the Set Registry scores? All else in SGC's teaser sounds great. But, as I've hinted in other threads, I am clueless on the "registry basics".
Can anyone enlighten me? Set Registry 101?

What I know about set registries is based on what PSA has been doing. Basically, the registry promotes set building by giving you a chance to share and compare your progress with other collectors. Cards in the sets are 'weighted' by importance or value. (example- a Mickey Mantle card will count much more in your set score than a common of the same grade). As you acquire more cards, or acquire higher graded cards you may rise in the rankings for that particular set's registry. It's friendly competition that inspires a lot of great conversation, trading, and interaction between collectors. I'm new to it myself, so if I left some important things out someone else please jump in. D.E. - it sounds like you have some great cards so I'm sure you will really enjoy the registry.

Built into PSA's set registry in the capability to verify that the card you say you have (by ID #) is the grade that you say it is (I hope that makes sense!).
So, for SGC to offer a set registry, they need to offer some sort of authentification verification which is not offered today. As both PSA and Beckett's offer this capability, I see it as something that SGC needs.
Does anyone know about this?

I'm not sure how you know that there will not be an authentication mechanism in the upcoming SGC Set Registry, but, given that it has been advertised as an "SGC only" registry and validating/verifying a card would be a simple matter of querying SGC's own databases, I'd be shocked if the registry lacked authentication. I guess we'll know soon.
