This holiday season I made a number of purchases on ebay and also just received back a submission of cards from SGC. I've updated the Set Registry in two areas:

How I Collect - Minnesota Vikings & Minnesota Twins

estang Topps Baseball All-Stars & Topps Football Vikings

Only some of the Vikings cards can be found on both registries. The Way I Collect has them all in one place.

Of the ebay purchases, I'm most pleased with 1979 Ahmad Rashad SGC 96 (cool card -- a "friend" of mine swiped one from me at a sleepover --I was only 9

--- in 79 --- now I have the best), 1974 Chuck Foreman SGC 96 and a 1974 Alan Page SGC 96.

I'm about half way or more to completing the 1977 & 1980 Topps Baseball All-Stars and would like to finsh those out in '04. I was a bit disappointed in the 1977 Fidrych that got a SGC 84 that I bought raw for gulp...$15....I really like that card and it is so hard to find...thought I had a 88, at least. Oh well, still looks nice. I may do some dabbling in the 78, 79 and possibly 81 All-Stars in the year ahead.

I'm going to focus most of my efforts in 2004 on Vikings from 60s and 70s. There's just about 320 Topps, Philly and Fleer cards to complete that. I figure to have near 50 or about 17% there. This will likely be my long-time SGC quest. Always looking for help and you can see that I'm now only missing 9 out of 26 Vikes from 1977...really want that Sammie White and Ron Yary in 96 or 92.

I learned a good deal from my most recent and 2nd all-time submission to SGC. I learned that SGC does a heckuva job and that I need to get a loupe and re-examine more closely what I'm doing. I got back a 1977 Steve Garvey in SGC 60 that I didn't put on the registry. I noticed when I got it back the surface wrinkles that it had (can't believe I didn't see them in the light). I noticed that centering on the 1980 All-Stars kept many (Garvey, Yaz, Simmons) them from a 92 grade, so I need to be more cognitive of that. I also now appreciate how difficult it is to get a NM/MT card from 70s and 60s.

I've also come to the realization that I'd like to attend a quality show with vintage raw commons etc.. to go through (none really in ATL area). This past year was the first year I got into graded cards and learned the nuances of the marketplace and the procedures. I now feel ready to roll in 2004.

Today I received 4 more cards in the mail and uploaded them and their images into the "How I Collect" Minnesota Vikings Set Registry. They are: 1976 SGC 96 cards of Paul Karuse, Jim Marshall and Carl Eller. The other is a 1966 SGC 88 Gordon Smith. Many thanks to Todd from Arizona for the offer/deal on the 1976 cards; they are very nice.

As of today, that gives me 46 cards with grades totaling 4,212 for an average of 91.56.

I also received in the mail my first SGC 98 Gem card. A 1981 Alan Page. A great photograph in the cold weather on the sidelines with my favorite All-Pro designation. Even though not in Vikings uniform, a sweet (final) card of this great man and HOFer. See attachment.

I picked up a 1976 Topps Fran Tarkenton Record Breaker in SGC 92 recently to bring my Vikings How I Collect Registry to 47 cards with a total grade points of 4,304...for an average of 91.57. I jumped a whole .01 !!!

I also picked up the 1974 Chuck Foreman from the same seller in SGC 92 for about 1/4 of what I paid for a SGC 96. The SGC 92 doesn't even compare upon close inspection (small print dot and rough factory edges). A good candidate to gift in the future.

Still waiting for my lures on various message boards and an email to BMW on some NM?MT or better raw cards to come my way. Help me feed my fixation, please!

This past week I received in the mail:

1968 Bobby Walden SGC 92
1968 Paul Flatley SGC 92
1970 Bill "Boom Boom" Brown SGC 92

and

1977 Matt Blair Rookie in PSA 9 (to upgrade on my SGC 88)

SGC cards were loaded into the registry (perhaps causing everything to crash) which brings me to 50 cards with a total grade points of 4,580 for an average grade of 91.6 and increase of .03 from my last post.

It's dawned on me more than before that the 100 point scale system is a good marketing numbering scheme. It just sounds good to have a 90+ average, even though that translates in the middle of a Nm/MT and Nm/MT+ card. I'm sure Tony can attest to this with his RedMan's.

Wow. It's been 4 months since I've last posted my Vikings SGC registry updates. Time goes by fast.

Recent SGC Registry additions are:

1970 Jim Marshall, SGC 88
1975 Dave Osborn, SGC 96
1962 Mel Triplett, SGC 84
1964 Jim Marshall, SGC 92
1968 Joe Kapp, SGC 88

which brings me to 55 cards with a total grade points of 5,032 for an average grade of 91.49 --- a decrease of .11 from my last post.

I've also purchased some PSA cards that I may look to cross-over later:

1964 Tommy Mason, PSA 8
1976 Jim Lash, PSA 8
1975 Carl Eller, PSA 8

I also purchased a 1980 Alan Page SGC 96 (Bears uniform), but didn't put that in the registry.

3 months since last post.

Vikings purchases that were submitted to the SGC How I Collect registry are:

which brings me to 58 cards with a total grade points of 5,316 for an average grade of 91.66 --- an increase of .16 since my last post.

I've submitted images for the cards, including the Carew under How I collect and 1977 Topps. It appears that when you add images later )after 1st submission) under "How I Collect" the card disappears from the registry until it is re-reviewed. This is not the case on the standard set registry area, whereby you can add images instantly.

Also picked up a couple more Vikings:

1976 Fred Cox, SGC 96

60 cards now at 5,508 for an average grade of 91.80 ... almost getting to 92!

70 cards totaling 6,424 points for an average grade of 91.77 -- an increase of .01 since my January 2005 post.

Things have gotten slow. I missed out on a couple super sweet SGC 96 cards that I got outbid on and forgot to track on ebay. They were from 1960s, but I cannot remember the year --- glad I've already forgotten because they were 1 of 1s

I've been picking up BVG Topps Baseball in 8.5 and higher from 1978 to 1980, with special focus on 1978. Let me know if you can help me there.

John,

I desire Topps (not OPC) North Stars from their inception through their demise from MN. However, it is not a main focus and I only do it for non-graded cards --- ExMT+ and better.

Not much of a hockey fan, but I watched a few games growing up that were called by Lou Nanne and/or that "other guy" with the curly hair that I think is still around.

Anyway, North Stars had cool uniforms --- cards are neat to collect.

Won't be too much longer before the Twins leave town at the rate the taxpayers and politicians in the state are treating the need for a new stadium. Just yesterday, the Twins sued the Metrodome/Minneapolis Sports Commission to release them from an obligation to play in the stadium. A whole generation of kids missed the opportunity to see outdoor MLB in Minnesota on nice summer days and nights --- A TOTAL SHAME

I cannot believe it has been so long since I gave an update to my "How I Collect" Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins cards.

I'm now at 231 out of 380 1961 to 1980 Minnesota Vikings cards with an average grade of 92.805. I have put in a new & improved scan of each and every card.

I recently received back a real nice submission from SGC, and I love the new holders. They stack better, feel better and the hologram on the reverse side has been replaced with a much improved SGC logo that looks very "classy". Nice job SGC!

Thanks Tony & FYS. Yes, I just recently noticed the all-star sets they put up. I just recently filled them out in the registry and have scans of all the cards. My 1977 set is complete, and I'm getting close on 1975! I will be cross-over another 40+ cards to SGC before the end of February; mostly from BVG holders with many 78 All-Stars.

It's been a year since I've posted, but I've been keeping my Vikings "How I Collect" Registry updated with new cards and scans. I'm now 282 out of 414 cards completed (expanding the volume of what to collect from 1961 to 1980). 68% complete.

Brian has helped me add Vikings Team Sets to the registry and this will help drive my focus on the remaining ~1/3 of my quest.

I'd love to share some cards in the thread. I've even loaded images to Photo Bucket. Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to use this message board to include the image directly into the posting. Why so difficult. Help.

Thanks estang for sharing with us again. It is always a pleasure to see another member's progressive and interaction here. It is the best part of being here in my opinion. I think the biggest thrill for me so far since joining the forums boards here is to see all the older members come back and start participating again. I really like that. It gives a sense of quality and presence when I look and see collectors who were originally here when everything first began. Congrats on all the progress you are making in your sets.

In reply mode, click on the third button from the left in the line of icons even with the word 'Post'. That will pop a dialog box up where you can paste the link to your photos. Make sure you're using the direct link option from photobucket.

I got it raw off of ebay. It was one soft corner away from be gem mint, IMHO. There's a 1975 Alan Page Sugar Daddy that I seek, and I believe another 1975 Gilliam. The above picture is a 1974 card. They are very enjoyable cards -- tobacco-esque...

Rarely do I see them at all, let alone in graded or "nice" condition. I think many are off-center or have candy stains on them. I was pretty stoked when I got it in the mail. Paid less than $5 for it shipped.

Grades popped. Happy on most(Raw Page Sugar Daddy) & disappointing on others like 72 Gilliam (PSA 9) & 65 Mason (PSA 8). Completed my 1979 All-Star set with the Larry Bowa SGC 96.

On the 65 Mason, what does A mean "Authentic"? Did you crack
that or send it in the slab?

Nice score on the Sugar Daddy Page! That has to look pretty
solid in the Sgc slab.

Probably means it was trimmed or altered in some way, but on the SGC invoice, he can check "A" and they'll slab it as authentic without a numerical grade.

Here's some updates to my Vikings & Carew registry sets. I'm now at 330 of 420 Vikings cards, or 79% complete.

Seems like all Joe Kapp cards are tough in Mint grade...

This one from John on the boards here...

An upgrade from SGC 88...

Tough Yary in high-grade due to print marks:

Tough to find these things in any grade...
