My first SGC graded card was a Yogi Berra 1953 Red Man Tobacco card, graded in August of 1998.
I was at the 1998 National Convention in Chicago and was negotiating with Al Rosen regarding the purchase of my complete set of 1953 Red Man cards in NrMt condition. Al took exception to one or two cards and offered me $1750 for the entire set.
I thought his offer was a bit low, so instead, I decided to submit a few of the cards to SGC for grading. I found out from SGC that Al had just submitted a dozen Red Mans, so I figured I would do the same. As it turned out, the Berra came back an SGC 96, and several others were graded SGC 88 and SGC 92.
The cards looked just great in the black holder and I was hooked for life!
By the way, the last time I looked at the SMR, the 1953 SGC 96 Berra was valued at $2275. So I guess I should thank Mr. Mint for getting me hooked on SGC! Thanks Al (lol).
