The Veterns Committee finalists ballot was released today. Take a look - who do you think has a chance? Bill Maz went in last year.
1. Curt Flood - great numbers, great career. My opinion - will get a serious look from the committee.
2. Rocky Colavito - don't knock the Rock. Also deserving.
3. Gil Hodges - long overdue for a spot in Cooperstown.
The rest of the bunch - Roger Maris, Ted Kluszewski, Thurman Munson, Don Newcombe, Allie Reynolds, Joe Torre, & Maury Wills.
My prediction - Gil Hodges!

IMHO, not the strongest list of candidates... of the top 3 that you list (correctly, I think), none got 2000 hits (Hodges 1900+, Flood 1800+, Colavito 1700+), none hit for a career .300 (Flood was close at .293), and none hit 400 HRs (Hodges 370 and Colavito 374). So, it's not hard to see why they aren't in the Hall today.
I think Mr. Hodges is the sentimental favorite -- I couldn't really say otherwise -I live in Brooklyn!

How about some of the still forgotten Negro Leaguers...."Gentleman" Dave Malarcher, Alexander Radcliffe. Perhaps Flood and Marvin Miller for their trailblazing labor movement (for good or for bad) efforts??

I looked only at Gil Hodges. 1944 - 1946 show his military service. In 1943 he played in only a few games. His first 3 years after this absence generated about 30+ HRs, 250 RBIs, 300 hits. If you tack these on to his career stats, you could arrive at the following improved numbers.
2200 career hits
400+ HRs
1450 + RBIs
Certainly, not Rob Neyer-like analysis, but the argument that Hodges goes over 400 HRs, 2000 hits and nearly 1500 RBIs is pretty easy to agree on if he played during the early-mid 40's.
