The only hobby-related gift I received this year was a bunch of SGC storage boxes. I can get 42 cards into each of them.
I'm not sure whether my wife is supportive of my collection ... or she's trying to tell me something ...

Cards I bought for myself as a Christmas gift
1965 Topps Bill Mazeroski SGC92 Some nice 1968 raw cards - Hodges, Pepitone, Lolich A beautiful 1949 Bowman Phil Rizzuto in a PRO 9.5 holder on Ebay. A lock for a 92 crossover.
All total - about $200. Not too shabby.
Anybody buried-in by the storm? Detroit got about 4 inches.

Old, dense-headed hammers are cool. Best nail pounders.

I was good to myself!
I got a '68 Mantle SGC-88 as an upgrade and 7 '68 high number commons -- all SGC-92.
This set building is getting out of hand!

I bought myself that 1980 Topps Vending box that was a bust (separate thread) and 5 graded cards in Mint 96 from dhcards on ebay (1978 George Foster, 1978 RBI leaders (Hisle/Foster), 1978 HR Leaders (Foster/Rice) and 1978 Batting Leaders (Carew/Parker). I absolutely love the Foster card & will put all of them with scans in the registry.
My other card related present was crown molding/shelving I put up in my office. It took a good 12 hours to complete the project but it is well worth it. It is a great way to display cards and I've attached a couple of pictures for all to get an idea.
In case you're interested in doing something similar, here is the details. Cost for project: ~$75. Size of room: 12' x 10 I bought the molding at Lowe's and I used Crown & base board both at 3.25" size. I used 1.5" L brackets into about every other stud (screwed in!) to support the shelf or "base board" molding. I then put the crown molding in by inserting up against the base board ridge and nailing them into each base board. You need a compound mitre saw to cut the crown molding because it is a 3 dimensional cut (we had to go to a cabinet maker to have them make the cuts). I used high-gloss ultra-white paint (you only need a quart).
The cards just simply lean up against the wall. The 3.25 shelf also supports cubed baseballs and barely fits a bobble head. If you have a larger room or ceilings higher than 8 feet, I would recommend using 3 5/8 molding and baseboards, which will give you extra space to put bigger objects. I also recommend that you put the molding just about 5 to 7 inches below any door or window frames, which gives better eye appeal. This will allow you to frame magazines or other larger objects.
I'm considering putting in a very small molding border at the top of the wall/ceiling for a cleaner look.
Enjoy!
Erik

I meant to say that I nailed the crown molding into each stud. I did not nail or glue together the base/shelf into the crown. Rather just nailing into the stud was sufficient.

That moulding looks nice - I would be worried that the sunlight would fade my cards though.. Has that happened to anyone?
My Christmas present for myself: 1956 Whitey Ford SGC86.

Erik,
I just figured out how to view the pictures -- very nice!
Jim,
Welcome to the board -- a 56 set in SGC holders will keep you busy for a while!

I've contacted SGC & Beckett to determine UVC protection

I am concerned about sunlight. Fortunately the room has wooden blinds that keeps a good deal of light out and the room isn't hit by direct sunlight during afternoon hours. I think I should be fine, but I have put inquiries into SGC & Beckett to better understand how their holders will/will not protect cards from sunlight.
I would have to think that they'd be OK. It's really not as much fun keeping the cards in a box compared to having them up for display.
I'll let everyone know when/what I hear from SGC & BVG.
Enjoy!
Erik
