SO....whats the deal...what do i need to look for to make sure the cards i have crossovered to SGC are NOT in vain... Please ...how can one tell if a card has been trimmed ????

oh..the reason i ask is i have some USA/PRO/PSA and BGS cards id love to see in SGC holders...and at 3 dollars a card its worth the crossover..even in a lower grade..but ive heard SGC flags cards for the minute little things.. whats anybodies secret at determing trimmed cards?

Lothar,
You just have to know what to look for. Different issues have various tell-tale signs. Some general clues:
(1) The type of striations or rough-cut on each cross section. Look for uniformity. Generally, but not always, a smooth edge will indicate trimming (exceptions: vending and presentation cards and certain T, E, and W issues, among others).
(2) Sharp edges. If a card appears to be recently removed from a pack, it might very well have sharp edges; but a card that has some surface wear or toning, generally will (should) not.
(3) Size. Some issues have a great deal of size variation and different types of production methods often yielded various dimensions. For the most part, this is the least reliable indicator, but one that you should still be aware of.
(4) A bowed edge or "bat wings." Sometimes when cards are trimmed they exhibit an edge which is not completely straight. Also, "extra" material near one or more of the corners (front or back), may indicate trimming.

One more thing to look for on trimmed cards is color consistency of the cardboard edges. Most older cards, even the wonderfully preserved ones, will show a little bit of discoloration on the edges. This isn't appearant if all four edges are discolored because you have no reference. If you look at the four edges and 3 are a little yellow but one is white, that is often a sign of trimming. You see, the white edge has been exposed to air and light for much less time than the other edges, so it has not yellowed.
