It's funny, our economy is in the dump, the stock market is down hard, unemployment is up, terrorism is in the air, war seems imminent, our deficit grows every day, yet the card market remains strong (in my humble opinion). I have been scouring ebay for deals on vintage from all the grading companies, and yet it seems the great deals/steals are just not out there. Even as I have been selling, many cards are getting more than I had hoped.

Is it just me, or does the vintage card market seem relatively strong all things considered?

Uniship,

Welcome to the boards. Glad to hear from a familiar poster.

I think the overall vintage market is still pretty good. There were a bunch
of red man cards that were offered by Champs & Bums over a two week
period. At the start of the auctions the cards sold at decent discounts
but at the later part of the offerings the cards got some strong bids.
I think it depends sometimes. I'll tell you my 401k has had a steady
arrow going down. It's terrible. I hope things improve.

I do think with cards though you should never over-extend yourself.
It's volatile. And if you enjoy the hobby and think you will be making all
this money, it will really sting if that doesn't happen.

I saw a 1958 Sgc 86 Bell Brand Campy sell at around $125. Was that
a good price? Anyone know? MW1?

Hello Uniship and welcome aboard.

From my perspective as a collector, the market seems plenty healthy -- maybe a little too healthy! It has been a while since I have been able to "steal" a card

Aconte,

The SGC 86 Bell Brand Campy was a steal at $125. Graded 1958 Bell Brand cards consistently realize prices greater than the Standard Catalog or Beckett Almanac. Some examples from our sales in the last 12 months:

1958 Bell Brand Campanella - SGC 80 - $179.83
1958 Bell Brand Koufax - SGC 70 - $404.00
1958 Bell Brand Drysdale - SGC 84 - $175.00
1958 Bell Brand Reese - SGC 80 - $125.00
1958 Bell Brand Hodges - SGC 70 - $95.00
1958 Bell Brand Gilliam - BVG 8.5 - $157.00 (failed to meet reserve)

One important consideration, however, is that SGC is unduly strict on some of the over-sized issues. For instance, on the first five cards listed above, I thought each grade was about half a point too low (and that probably had something to do with the final selling price -- each card image was clearly better than the grade on the holder).

One final note: I believe that several of these cards were purchased by a dealer and unless I'm mistaken, the Koufax was resold and ended up bringing an even higher price.
