I'm still a relative neophyte collector, and I started using e-bay exclusively. Up to now, I've been collecting only one set of cards, the 1967 Topps Football, so my opportunities to purchase what I need have been somewhat limited. From buying raw and graded cards on e-bay I have established a few sources that sometimes have cards I need. However, I'd like to establish more and would welcome any suggestions on how to do so.
Now that my 1967 Topps Football set is completely SGC-graded I'm concentrating on upgrading the lower-end cards to as high as possible. Last week I submitted about 35 cards to SGC under the Set Registry Special that hopefully will advance that goal.
At the same time, I'm looking for another set to conquer. I'm considering 1966 Topps Baseball, but am intimidated at the cost and time collecting this entire SGC-graded set from scratch would entail. I have some commons of this set, about 20% of the cards, but none of those are grade quality, and obtaining gradeable raw or graded cards of this set via e-bay seems like a pricey proposition. It would be nice to find a cost-effective way to jumpstart my effort without breaking my bank account. Maybe I'll start hitting the streets at garage sales, hoping to hit the mother lode.

I took another look at the set -- there does not appear to be a single card under 88...amazing!

Actually, that is only one of 7rhode's sets -- he has some extra nice stuff out there -- check out his '59 Fleer Ted Williams set -- 92% complete and a weighted average a touch over 90! His collections of stars from '63, '65, 69, '72, and '73 are all very nice, as well -- all weigh-in over 88. I would certainly like to see him on the board...he certainly is a very accomplished SGC collector.
Also, check out Vintage Classic's '71 set -- 86% complete and a weighted average over 88. This is a monster set froma very difficult year.
However, I think that the red man collections here get my vote for the the nicest. mrredman's complete set of '52's and almost complete (98%) '53's are absolutely beautiful....likewise for aconte's partial sets from '52 (23%), '54 (83%), and '55 (76%). As a wiseman once said, "red man's rock"

Strider (Daniel),
You might want to take a look at this thread from the CU board on building the '66 set.
http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=174341
I've read before that the high-numbers are arguably the toughest cards from the 60's to find in high grade...even tougher than the semi-high '63...which is saying alot. I've dabbled with this set a bit (I have most of the stars in PSA holders), but I don't think I will pursue it any further.
Finding nice raw cards won't be easy -- the set is plagued by diamond cuts which, IMHO, can really kill the eye appeal of a card.

Thanks for the compliment on my 1971 baseball set. It continues to be a great challenge and has been five years in the making. I hope to get a scanner soon and post some card pictures.

Hi Joe and welcome to the board! Could you tell us more about your set and how you've built it? Have you run into the proverbial brick wall as you've gotten increasingly close to completion?
Again, welcome!
